I had a few spare hours today, so I quickly did the bare metal Ki-43 skin Mitsu requested. This aircraft was flown by the IJAAF's Kumagawa Instructional Air Unit, based at Saitama in Japan. Apparently the unit's instructors would sometimes use these machines to attack B-29s. The aircraft features the white home defence bands used as an ID marking for Japanese based aircraft.
Most bare metal Ki-43s seem to have been either assigned to training units or were used by fighter squadrons as target towing aircraft or to train new pilots while waiting for newer aircraft, usually Ki-84s.
