Forza motorsport 4 is the best I have ever played for an all round package. You will need a steering wheels and pedals to get the most out of it. This is only on Xbox though I think, so no good if you want to play a PC game.

And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

Would rudders work as pedals? Thanks.

 Rich,

Check out Pcars,it's available on xbox/Ps3 or PC and looks great.

you may be able to map some rudder pedals to work but most wheels come with a set unless you get a real cheap wheel.  I got a wheel and pedals for the PS3 and it works on the PC, IIRC it was around 50 bucks.

As difficulty goes im a fan for the formula one games. For full sim you have to watch ur tires. Feul and car any damage affects speed and down force. Also you can adjust ur own car as well as plan ur own pit stratagy. The gave i currently have is F1 2012

Many newer racing games have less realism than GP racing 2.

It's bizarre seeing the steps back ward in simulation genre games.

that said, GTL and GPL are fine games.

I've always been partial to Live For Speed, they haven't updated it in a while, but it's a lot of fun to play.

I'm a big fan of racing games, and as far as the most fun, I'd say the Need For Speed Underground series takes it. Forza is the most realistic I've played, and the online community makes it fun

The best simulators are for the pc. Why settle for less?

gtr2 (check power & glory mod), rfactor, live for speed, netkar, etc... old timers (no big hw requirements) but good sims.

Also you have the new batch of "freemium" sims: raceroom, simraceway... I don't know if they are as realistic as the previous generation.

Assetto corsa, rfactor2: promise new level of realism. No stable release yet.

Free as in free beer (although beta). Reportedly realistic: racer.nl

Let's not forget a sim from another dimension in racing: richard burns rally. Still the best rally sim. Frustratingly realistic. Also runs fast in old PCs.

Get a decent FFB wheel!

Cool. Isnt there a new game out now? A cross country game?

Saitek makes wheels, pedals, a stick. Are those the components I need? I dont mind spending a little dough but I'd like to do it right.

I used to like racing as a kid so Im thinking this is maybe the new genre to get into.

General consensus is that top of the line wheel is G-27 by Logitech. http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g27-racing-wheel

iRacing is one of the best racing sims, but it requires online connection, monthly payment and heavy time investment to be good. And it's not just for fun...it's competitive and used as a tool by real drivers.

There are no modern offroad games.
