Dirt 3 is probably the best off road racing game, arcade ish but definitely fun.
Grid and Grid 2 are my two favorite racing games, both are great with Grid 2 just coming out last month. Only gripe with Grid 2 is no cockpit view but there's already a mod to fix that. Arcade style, made by the same developers as Dirt 3. Plenty of fun.

Need For Speed Underground 1 and 2 are by far the best racing games ever made. Forza 4 is fun as well, but if you want something other than paved roads and super cars try the Dirt series. Dirt 2 and 3 are the best ones followed up by Dirt Showdown. If you don't want any of those go on your PC and download Need For Speed World. Its free and works like WoT if you've ever played that.

The best simulators are for the pc. Why settle for less?

gtr2 (check power & glory mod), rfactor, live for speed, netkar, etc... old timers (no big hw requirements) but good sims.

Also you have the new batch of "freemium" sims: raceroom, simraceway... I don't know if they are as realistic as the previous generation.

Assetto corsa, rfactor2: promise new level of realism. No stable release yet.

Free as in free beer (although beta). Reportedly realistic: racer.nl

Let's not forget a sim from another dimension in racing: richard burns rally. Still the best rally sim. Frustratingly realistic. Also runs fast in old PCs.

Get a decent FFB wheel!

excellent post, and I liked and agree with what you say about Richard Burns Rally, super frustrating, but super satisfying when you get a corner right, and still hasn't been topped as the best / most realistic rally game ever.

Forza (still just run 3) does it for my racing fix:


(note the direction of skidmarks ..ya baby, we were driftin big time uphill around that corner

..and catchin a bit of air ..ohh yaa. Love that GT-40 ..high sidewall tires an all.


THen there's car customization .. spent hours makin up the 'Dragon' .. a boss 429 Mustang that runs the lightweight new-tech OHC motor ..makes the car amazing without that big boat anchor 429 up front. Rips thru the 'ring under 8 seconds ..old school look, retro rod they call 'em these days

Don't get me started on my all-wheel drive blown 540 Hemi powered Dodge Daytona
That is scary big Mopar fun, runs away from a Bugatti Veyron on the Mulsanne straight and handles well enough to keep the lead gained by a healthy margin thru the twisties

Well I did it. I ordered the L-Tech so I'll be racing soon. Thanks for all the recommendations on games. W-Maker Im a little confused on the download for that game. Im not sure what files need to be downloaded, or, where the new version is. Thank you.

I want to end up with 3 or 4 games. This is an entire new genre for me.

I played IRacing for a few months. Liked the game and competition just fine but hated the cheezy little steering wheel and shifter controls. Made me feel like a 12 year old every time I played.

I race iRacing....all sorts of racing to be done...road courses and ovals..F1 to nascar to idy car to GT cars....Graphics are great....a bit expensive but its highly regarded as a great practice tool for race drivers in real life....

If a bump is on the track in real life...its on iracing....

I do my racing on console, use to play Gran Turismo but after GT5 I'm done with them and have been enjoying Forza 4 since January. I do a lot of the Multi-class Le Mans style racing.

Yep. Late on my reply but that's how it goes. That Forum I gave a link on has basically all the info needed to enjoy P&G. Its one of the best free community efforts in gaming that I've ever seen.
