Icon Range
« on: June 16, 2013, 10:12:01 PM »
I was in the AvA and it has a 3k range....
This was so much better than the 6k we have in the main arena because it allowed me to get the jump on a target or run away if I got into trouble....
With a 6k range this is very difficult to do...

In other words, it produces less fighting.

No thanks.

I think it would increase the use of the Hanger queens because with a 6k range once you are seen, you are stuck in the fight....
I had plenty of fights in the AvA with 3k range, and they were better than anything I have had in the MA......

Less fights and more hangar queens is not a fair trade.

I don't count getting the jump on somebody as a fight.

that's how most of the "top sticks", and even more of the "not so good sticks" get their kills now isn't it?

don't say i'm full of it either...i've seen it, repeatedly.  :neener:

-1 and for the exact reason you want it. if you have to rely on a 3k icon range to pick and run...you're not doing it right.

Actually, it could also result in more fighting. Some may retire quickly when they see
a plane time they don't want to engage at 6k. That evasion would come later with 3k
and, as such, may be less successful.

I tell ya that no enemy icon is truly a challenge. It made me head yo-yo just to actively
engage the enemy and even then I'm having to guess what I'm up against. 3k may
bea good compromise.

Not always the case. 3k you are probably stuck in a fight. 6k, depending on what plane,
you may have an option.

what is  a hangar queen?

A phrase that denotes a plane modeled that gets little or no use in the game.
Often, though, it may be false perception (like Semp claiming he has never once
seen an He-111 in the MA, even the week it came out, therefore, in spite of the
screenshots posted by players on the forum, it never happenend - heh).

It is also a vague term as the threshold for "hangar queen" status varies from claimant to claimant.  For some it is a hangar queen if it doesn't get at least 2.5% of the air craft kills, for another it might be if it doesn't get .25% of the aircraft kills, an order of magnitude difference.

All in all it is a silly concept as there are many aircraft that are required for a WWII flight combat game that will not see much use in an MA type environment.

On the most recent Pig Night, which features the 3k icons, there were roughly 20, at 10 per side.  However, all 20 were flying between two nearby bases, so the concentration was similar to what you often see between two bases in the MAs.

I think the icon range is fine.  The thing I wish HTC would chance is the identifier range.  For instance, at 6000 yards an enemy icon would show an enemy icon of either 4, 2, or 1 indicating the number of engines a plane has.  Then at 3000 yards have the MODEL show up (109, P47, A6M, etc), then at 600 yards allow for the type (109G-2, P47M, A6M3).

I think the 6000 yard identifier icon is a bit much, I think there should be some more "fog of war" immersion and this would help provide that.  Currently, anything beyond 6000 yards is seen as a dot and before it is in icon range we can simply look at the map ans see if there is a friendly in the area and if the map is blank then it is obviously an enemy.  Once that dot becomes a red icon showing that it is a Nik2, it allows the faster planes to tuck their tail and run MUCH easier than if the identifier simply said "1".

I think it would actually encourage more combat. Icons give too much away too soon.
