I stopped smoking cigarettes.
I now smoke a pipe.
For the Nancy's that are about to get their panties in a bunch, I understand that it is not a "safe alternative".
By the same token: the wife doesn't complain about the smell, I do not feel the need to smoke anymore, my lungs are very thankful for the dramatically reduced volume of smoke in them due to not inhaling, my wallet is thankful because the cost of smoking a pipe has been a lot less due to it not being nearly as often as a habit and I get to have variety in what I smoke.
So, all that being said, I have no regrets at not smoking cigarettes anymore. I do not miss the compulsion to smoke, the irritation at not being able to, the $70+/week habit, the hacking up phlegm in the morning, the shortness of breath, looking for my cigarettes when the phone rings, I get into the car, after I eat, etc and all the other crap associated with smoking cigarettes including it being the first and last thing I did every day.
Although smoking a pipe may seem like trading one habit for another, it doesn't seem like it has been taking as much of a toll on my lungs and wallet, yet it satisfies my urge to smoke.
Regardless, we all have to die from something and I'll be damned if it is going to be old age...
