Hmmm, some girl here just smashed into a tree while talking on her mobile, killed herself, boyfriend heard the crash over the phone.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Must have been the tree's fault for being in the way...

I don't doubt you, but that's not a rigorous method to assert a hypothesis, what about VonMessa's story? There's your proof by contradiction to your 'for all' assertion.

Ive seen accidents caused by people talking while driving. So why not pass a law outlawing "talking while driving", or, "scratching your bum while driving". When do things cross the thresh hold where Big Bro gets to step in and intrude even more in our lives? Stealing even more of our wealth? I for one refuse to write this ticket. Unless the driver doing it is so engrossed they arent paying attention to the road. And we already had a charge for that ; Its called "negligent driving".

As for "rigorous methods" those usually involves "statistics" which are a form of witch craft all their own. "We" dont have much respect for them so why should you?

I'm sure you know a lot Rich, just your delivery could use some work
My delivery is done with a purpose. Its not personal so dont take it so. Your first two were a bit edgy too but Im still smiling. See  :)

At my University they have a driving simulator lab and they run experiments constantly with overloading a driver's attention and then monitoring his / her ability to assimilate and prioritize tasks. Just like SA in AH, every distraction contributes to a reduction. If you throw in a critical driving situation right at the point of a critical conversation normal people (as opposed to fighter pilots, even simulated ones  rock) just aren't very good at sorting that out.
Yes Universitys are great for "simulating" and "statisticale'izin". But they aint real life and again when does it cross the thresh hold when a bunch of elected idiots can pass a law whose real purpose, tho they deny it, is to create new revenue streams for Big Bro? Now Im avoiding the "P" word here while trying to make my point about "intrusion into our lives".

Chatting to someone in the car is slightly different because they are present and can also observe the driving situation.
If the driver is chatting my friend we can assume the rider is chatting as well and is just as engrossed.

Even talking on a hands free set detracts although it's probably at the lower end of the list. You are right about the other mundane tasks people do, they shouldn't do those either and some of them are worse. Once I rode my motorcycle behind a car driver who was having a shave and putting on his tie etc at 70 m.p.h. on a dual carriage way
Ive given long, accurate, continuous radio comms while chasing a felon at speeds up to 120 mph for 20+ mins and without cracking up. I have no special powers that others dont have. 30+ years and Ive never cracked up a squad despite all the mayhem and many, many citizens have stellar driving records as well. Despite talking on a cell phone while driving, which BTW I also do.

My Gosh! We let deaf people drive, badly disabled people drive, people so dang old they think they are still in their '46 Buick, yet we calmly accept this nit wit law on cell phones. My friend the longer Im on this job the more Big Bro, and its vision of imposed Utopia, scares me. We cant talk politics here so I'll leave it at that. Next is stop sign cams and speed cams everywhere, to go along with real time cams all over the place. Eventually it will be robots, retina scans, and "Pre Crime".

Im just glad I remember a simpler time where people had individuality, honor, common sense, and responsibility.

In AZ we have an open container law. Most believe that is for alcohol, which it does include but is not limited to. The law iirc can be applied to drinking any beverage while driving a vehicle. I'm not sure if anyone ever gets the ticket for anything other than alcohol, but the law was written as such, I'm guessing maybe as much as 6-7 decades ago...

Driving school was a long time ago, but the law was covered.

We have a law in PA stating that it is unlawful to sleep on top of a refrigerator...

Lol, the point was that enough ppl thought that drinking anything while driving was a distraction. Yes driving a car back then took more skill...

I used to do Phx to Ft. Collins only to stop for gas/bathroom. I can attest to many things that are distracting while driving, some are ok under some circumstances and others are probably rarely safe to do. I did round trips in Dec/Jan and as you can imagine I've seen ppl in blizzards using their cell phones as they normally would. Rich has a point, we don't need another law, the law we have; being negligent while driving does just fine. Using a cell phone without hands-free squarely fits in that category imo. However, I'm not on-board the w/big brother gist part of it, it already exists and should be enforced to save lives/limbs. We probably have a texting while driving fatality once a week in phx, I imagine we have a lot of serious accidents that were simply talking about as much, maybe more...only the texting ones make the news.

Those causing injury while driving on a Phone should be put in a Cell.  :t

Yup, same in Britain: 'Driving without due care and attention'.

Statistics are obviously open to abuse and interpretation and especially uselessly for extrapolation. I was talking about scientific method and when done properly it does produce meaningful and useful data and knowledge. Whether you have faith in science or not it truly pervades everyone's life to an unnoticed extent and has done more good than any political or religious movement ever.

The University simulator has been proven valid. If they went about producing peer-reviewed papers on assumption they wouldn't be attached to the Uni for very long. I think one or more of the motor manufacturers helps witht he funding. I'll try to find out.

Ive given long, accurate, continuous radio comms while chasing a felon at speeds up to 120 mph for 20+ mins and without cracking up.

Isn't that a essentially a commentary on your primary activity - driving? Presumably you also had training which included your driving? I'd imagine most in-car cellphone conversations could wait but people even seem unwilling to let them ring more than once

Thing is about cellphones is how quickly they pervaded the culture and became the standard attachment for the side of one's head including the use of one arm. This could explain the special legislation

Im just glad I remember a simpler time where people had individuality, honor, common sense, and responsibility.

Me too and I agree with you, especially in this instance. People used to take more pride and time in their activities including driving now everything is mostly convenience-focussed it seems.

I object!

How can that be determined?

You guys can't even drive on the proper side of the road...   :P

ehhh I wish the honda accord I rear-ended thought that no damage was done, you know since I was talking on a cell phone and obviously not distracted-therefore no damage could have been done.

$3k for some headlamps & bumper.
run into me while you have a phone stuck to the side of your head, or puttin on makeup, or texting, or reading the newspaper, or looking at a map, or stoned, or drunk...you better have good hospitalization insurance.

if my wife and/or kids are in the car when it happens, make sure your life insurance is paid up...

and you better hope that your family doesn't miss you too much while your in jail, seriously, even after the guy yelling at me, calling me all sorts of names and stuff like that, hit the pole I hung up my phone, pulled over and made sure he is okay, and I would have done the same thing even if he hit my car instead of a lamp post, car crashes suck, but if you ever come out of one with the intent to cause harm to the person that caused it, I would say you're a bigger dirt bag than a distracted driver at that point in time

Nash If you would have seen some of the accidents I've seen caused by drunk drivers and the death of children as a result of those accidents you wouldn't feel that way.
What used to piss me off was when one walked away, after killing a whole family, without injury. I personally would beat that guy until the cops got there if a drunk ever hurt my daughter. The same way I would if he just walked up to her and slapped her in a store. There are laws then there are deep down man laws.

notice I said distracted driving, drinking and driving is unacceptable to me, if you drink and drive 1 time than that's it, you should never be able to drive on the street again period, and if you have a crash while drinking and driving. life in prison, no parole ever, the difference between drinking and driving and distracted driving is that, "oh crap need both hands on the wheel right now, drop phone" the thing with drinking and driving is you cant just "drop the phone" so to speak
