Glass walls on the boarders - Flying off the edge of the map
« on: October 11, 2013, 11:57:57 PM »
So, tonight I was leading a small section of KI-61's. We had reports of P40's at the edge of the map; just off 0/10 kp 7. Speculation was that they were covering for bombers that may be further out into no-mans land. I took my handful of guys from {The Gun Fighters} who had attached themselves to me post first contact, and we shot over to see what we could find. We got to the edge, looked around, and didn't see anyone. I started a lazy right turn with the intention to head back to base, and to CAP the field we were defending: A-45. When POP! I was back in the tower! I was immediately followed by one or two of my wingmen who had been in close formation.
Our tail-end Charlie saw us explode and managed to pull up in time to avoid a collision with what I can only assume was a nano-tube-reinforced-clear-aluminium-( a nod to Star Trek the Voyage Home) -indestructible-glass wall that shot to 26K!   <InCrypt grits teeth>

My first question: Who put that thing there!    LOL

Seriously though, I don't ever remember there being an edge of map boundary that would put you in the tower. Am I wrong? Has it always been that way? Or is this a new "Feature" - which I'm not opposed to -  but gosh, It's got to be announced a bit more strenuously!

Let me know, because it was a sudden and abrupt end to what was shaping up to be an interesting frame.

Never heard of such a thing happening. I don't even think there's a setting for that!

I was in a P-40 escorting those bombers that skated the edge but never went past. It wasn't the plan to be that far west. We evaded defenders in our path to the north and just ended up over there. We definitely didn't want to show as off the map.

I think there may be a glitch or 2 on this map!   I had a similar thing happen to me just south of A38,I was chasing a P38 and was about 10K doing 300 mph when all of a sudden my plane snapped in half and I was towered. I got a message "you crashed" yet I hit nothing and didn't loose parts like you would normally find.

I just chalked it up to one of those things, until I read this post!

It's not like this hasn't happened before with invisible objects causing problems.

Don't get me wrong,I had great fun but it was a strange event and might warrant looking into.

Can you give me a sector location where this happened to you. I will do some testing to see if I can reproduce things but there are no custom objects in this map. It only uses things straight out of the Terrain Editor so not sure what could be causing this.

InCrypt I was able to reproduce your issue. Took off from A45 and flew straight toward the map edge. Got to it, flew a bit passed and then bam, crashed message an in the tower. I am now testing some terrains that were created this year to see if they have the same issue and older terrains. Since the TE and Game has been updated since NewBrit was made not sure if it simply something has changed and NewBrit simply needs a rebuild or if something HTC has introduced that you can't fly off the edge of the map in a 512 terrain.

In the smaller terrains (256) you really are a 512 terrain but the map is only showing half of what really exists. Which is why you can fly off the edge of your clipboard map but you really have not flown off the edge of the constructed map.

Morfiend in regards to A38 I went and checked and there are no airspawn around there. Actually none at all on the map. The Vehicle spans are set to terrain alt (so they shouldn't be floating in the air) and have collide with attribute turned off. So as far as I can tell there are no floating visible or invisible objects in that area that you can collide with.

Will still do some testing and digging though.

Ghostdancer, IIRC it was around 2,9,5  there's a valley with hills surrounding the area.

JG11 had several P40 caught in the valley in the area.

It could be many things so I just put down as one of those things, however it is good to see you take this serious enough to check it out for me! :aok

If I would have lost an elevator, aileron or rudder it would make sense but my plane seemed to snap in half right behind the cockpit, like it hit something and I couldnt bail or anything as I was immediately sent to the tower.

ghostdancer,

Thanks for reproducing the error. For us it was 0/11 KP 1.1. We flew down the 0/10-0/11 sector line at 25.7 K and then started a right hand turn once we saw no contact. The base was visible off my right wing - I was looking right at it when I poofed into the tower.

It was VERY Strange; especially considering I've used "Off Map" vectors in the past with no ill effect. Keep us posted on the 512 map boarders thing you suspect it may be. Like I said, if this is how it is, I'm not opposed to it (keeps pilots on the map and potentially in the DAR rings). But, if it is the way things will be going forward, pilots will need to be warned about the obstruction so accidental collisions with "The Worlds End" can be kept to a minimum. :-)

It's happened before.  3 or 4 years back now. Was a PTO map then too. Don't remember which. If I remember right a bunch of bombers we were escorting ran into "The Edge" and poof!

Well I have checked Mariana and Germany terrains and flying off map is doable on them. I need to check some older maps though to rule out is an issue with old maps. So still digging.
