Carpet Bombng a spawn point?
« on: October 14, 2013, 07:23:40 AM »
The other day, I wanted to spawn to an enemy base in a GV.  The reds had the spawn so well covered, you could hardly move before getting slammed.
Is it possible to carpet bomb a spawn point?
How many B17s would it take to carpet bomb a spawn point?
What bomb size?
What salvo and delay setting would you use?
Would you just use the map as a drop point instead of the bomb-sight?

usally no body will sign up for such a mission.

I tried and managed to  get about 7-8 kills on some maps bombing from about 7k , after 7k even with full zoom you wont be able to see anything...

but if you can get couple guys up in a stroch to mark the area that you are going to bomb it might work.

Thanks for the reply.  Next time it happens.  I will try a few things with our squad and see if we can find a way to at least open a window.

What you think.  Would it take thousand pound bombs?

What I've found is using more smaller bombs works better.

If you look at the spread of an He 111 carrying the 32 50kg bombs, it covers a lot more ground than a B-17 dropping 500 lb bombs.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

I am surprised a 100+ pound bomb would work on any enclosed armored GV but bombing GVs is not something I do very often.  I assume it turret s them or tracks get busted.

It kills them. Two are enough to kill a Panzer IV H.

The hundred lb bombs do. Just fine, they are more of a challenge but to guys who are experienced aim and patience the hundred lb bomb will yield similar results as anything else at a fraction of the weight, drag, etc.  :)

If you post a carpet bombing mission against gv's the enemy will go away before you show up.

Just like this one.

100lb'er should be sufficient to destroy any gv if it hit. It is after all landing on the lid and carries significantly more explosive force than a tank shell, albeit without the shaped charge or penetrator cor of AT rounds

it would require a direct hit.  A 250# bomb that lands a few feet from a wirble will not kill it.

It isn't difficult though, if you know what you're doing. I hit my target almost every time in the il2 with those 50kg bombs  :)

Dive bombing in an IL2 isn't carpet bombing (which implies level bombing with heavy bombers and large bomb loads).

My guess is your accuracy would decline precipitously if you were actually carpet bombing.

yup. But at places like V85, you can easily get upwards of 6 kills. The only issue is surviving the fighters that are there to try and help ensure the camp stays in place.

bish and hordes

look at your video, it would appear as though a cv beat you to it or you only present the part of the film that is round two - judging from all the craters. If it is round two, and it's hard to tell if the hangars are even up at that point, but did you expect someone to spawn out of a hangar with 30 B-17's above?

Also jus wonderin how this is carpet bombing somewhere that is camped? Did they camp their own base?

To the OP, was it v85? If so, spend some time there, you'll figure the spots to target, not that I want to encourage this type of thing...
