900 IAP Yak-9T
« on: October 16, 2013, 09:41:08 AM »
This Yak-9T was flown by Snr. Lt. Paul Golovachyov of 900 IAP in 1945. He began the war flying I-16s and later flew the Lagg-3, Yak-1, Airacobra, La-7 and in 1945 the Yak-9T. During his career he score 30 kills and survived the war after cheating death three times. On June 25th 1942 shortly after scoring his first kill he became the victim of an unseen Me 109. The German fighter riddled Golovachyov's plane with gunfire and wounded him, but he managed to escape and land his plane. In December of that year over Stalingrad he was wounded in the face by return fire from a Ju 88 that he was shooting down. Knocked unconscious, he recovered in time to crash his aircraft on the bank of the River Don. Finally in 1944 he engaged a Ju-188 with his La-7 at 29,000 ft. Finding his guns had frozen he rammed the German aircraft and was again knocked unconscious but recovered in time to crash land on an airfield.

La-7 hunting at 29,000ft.  I wonder how often that happened during the war.

Beautiful Greebo, very good to see new Yak skins. Ever think of doing a Soviet Jug ala D-11? :pray

Thanks guys, glad you like the Yak.

Did the Soviets ever use P-47s in anger? I was under the impression they weren't very impressed with the Jug and held it back from combat.

I also vaguely recall seeing a post from someone in here saying they were doing a Soviet P-47.
