H-series P-51s did in fact utilize ADI - to get the little V-1650 to pump out 2,200+ hp @ 90in boost, but P-38s didn't have the space/strength to pack it.
The R-2800s really needed it, due to being air-cooled lazy-bones radials,
which could not hack the liquid cooled mills power/capacity ratios, without cooking/fading rapidly..
Or being hugely thirsty gas hogs, by using excessively rich fuel settings as
defacto coolant..
