2.JG52 109K "Yellow 5" (USRanger Request)
« on: November 02, 2013, 07:17:22 PM »
"Yellow 5" was captured in May 1945 at Ainring Airfield in South Germany. Later the plane got U.S. markings and was transferred to Salzburg-Maxglan. There the plane ended on a scrapyard.
The plane was camouflaged in RLM 75/83/76. The spinner was overall black or maybe RLM 70. The plane had typical Luftflotte 4 markings as the yellow band around the engine cowling and the yellow rudder. Interesting is the fact that the "Yellow 5" was just painted on the port side of the fuselage. Below the horizontal tail "mdj 24.4.45" was painted on with white paint. This was the manufacture code for FMW Flugzeug- und Metallbauwerke Wels, were the plane was repaired.

I used the colors : RLM 75 RLM 83 and RLM 76 but when I viewed the skin in-game the colors were extremely dark so I applied a brightness filter to each color by +10 brightness and -20 contrast. I then applied a slight curve to curves and +5 levels.

Also with the nose of the A/C, I am confused as to the paint are two different colors. I am actually working on fixing that now, I am sure you can see it in the screenshots I posted below. I fixed it a little, because before it was really obvious and it appeared a lot more sloppy than it should have. I tried to fix it but it didn't work out too well when I tried.

NOTE : I also used IL2 as a profile but IL2's colors were way off so I pretty much used it as a guideline except with the correct colors. This was a tricky skin because it was hard to find any profiles on the skin.  :(

Cool so far. I did notice one major error: the cross on the underside of the wings is the wrong style.

The correct style for late war would be either type 3 or 4 on the chart. Also it appears too small, try a width of 100 pixels.

Also, your RLM 75 seem too light.

Here's an issue you'll have on any 109F-K: the rear portion of the prop spinner is on the fuselage pieces of the bitmap. This area needs to be painted the same as the separate spinner pieces. See your second to last screenshot so see what I'm talking about.

What did you mean by this? Maybe I can help you figure it out.

For what it is worth.

Our German brethern are a pretty fastidious bunch, even in the hardest, darkest days of their war I dont see them allowing the plane to get "that" dirty.

I'd say tone down the panel line grime a touch.

But thats just my opinon.

Spinners were pretty much always RLM 70 afaik
If you traced over the default balkenkreuzen (it looks like you did), don't. They're junk. Proportion, size, placement, all wrong. Often in style too.
For proportions you can look at the nice chart that Devil posted, it's straight from RLM documents. I have that book and I think it specifies placement and size of the balkenkreuzen on the 109 as well, but I don't have it at school with me. Try to find pictures of 109s on the internet. In general, the underwing crosses are larger and the upper crosses are larger too iirc but also much closer to the wing root.

The problem with going off of profiles is that they're (very) often wrong, too. Balkenkreuz markings were fairly inconsistent throughout the war, and there are plenty of photographs of fighter aircraft with 'incorrect' markings for the time period, but in general unless you have one of them I'd go with the period correct markings regardless of what the profile shows.

Good advise.  Certainly the underside krueuzen are way wrong.

Good start though.

I LOVE the strong panel line look.  I wish all skins were like that (my personal taste). Please don't change that part of it. :pray  :salute

The underwing crosses should be black and the yellow band should also be on the oil cooler housing.

On the one ingame, there is a bit of bump mapping misaligned with the texture around one of the service hatches. I don't know if you know about it and have revised it already, but I was looking at the skin and noticed it. :salute

(Image removed from quote.)
The correct style for late war would be either type 3 or 4 on the chart.

I think they should be (per the profile drawing) solid crosses which were used very late in the war.
