OK yes Im sure you all know my dislike for this map by now.

Lemme explain the major problem for me:

The fites are just too concentrated on the fronts. Theres too few areas of opportunity for countries to attack on a given front. This results in furballs of HUGE proportion which could be fun if my machine didnt bog down with the 30 planes it needs to render plus all the ack going off from off shore carriers.

Some of you love big furballs, great. Im running on a P3 550MHz machine with a 32MB GeForce card which is by now very average. These types of furballs are leaving me with FRs in the single digits at times.

HTC, my opinion is create more open maps with more areas of opportunity. Having this many planes in a single sector is playing havoc with my machine.

Dingy.. I think you got problems far greater than the map. Just hear me out..

Check your system resources. If they are below 90%, you need to free up your resources otherwise you ARE going to take a huge framerate hit. Mine is always 93-94% before I log in. I use the classic ctrl-alt-del to shut down everything except systray, rnaapp(windows DUN), saicnfg(Saitek config for joystick), ramidle(frees up RAM) and Explorer. I also have 320MB of RAM.

I get fps in the upper 30s, today when the rooks were raiding us down south we had about 50 to 60 players at a single field within 5 miles. I had fps in the high 20s during the whole thing.

My system specs:
Celeron 466
SB Live!
Voodoo5 5500 PCI
320MB PC100 SDRAM
ZooM 56K ISA Modem
30GB Maxtor 7200RPM HDD

I think that's about all that really matters as far as system performance in AH. You should also set your computer to a network server and tweak the Windows DUN if you are using a modem. Use MTUspeed or something like that. See if you can't overclock your GeForce, I know the Voodoo series has the ability to overclock the vid card processors.
Also, go to 3dfiles.com (or cdfiles.com I ferget) and download TweakAll to really tweak out your system.

It isn't the furballs dragging you down. I have the same processor as you with a 16 meg video card (Voodoo3 AGP)and 128 megs RAM. I get fp's in the 40's and 30's in furballs. There must be another reason your system is bogging down.

Yep, my other system is a P3 450 with an ATI 16 mb expert 128. It gets around 40 - 45 fps in furballs. (Smoke will cause a big hit though.)

You have something chewing up your system resources...

Normal furballs of 20 planes total are fine. Its when the numbers jump up to 20 planes PER COUNTRY and a carrier is offshore or smoke is coming up buildings. My resources are at 75% with AH running and a browser open.

Where does one get that ramidle program? I'm always scrapping for extra system resources.. usually in high 80s to low 90s. Frame rate is high 20s to lower 30s and rarely drops below 10 fps.

I have experienced random FR drops for a period of 4-5 seconds.. but I believe that to be lag of some sort.

I got p2 300 with 96 megs of ram (recently pumped it to 160 megs, but my FR is still the same), voodoo 3 2000 AGP 16 megs runnign Win98

I get 27fps all the time, going down to 23 in furballs. The only thing that hits my FR are clouds (in a small way) and smoke (which literally KILLS my FR when close).

You really have to go to START->RUN type in MSCONFIG, choose SELECTIVE STARTUP, then go to the STARTUP tab on the top right and uncheck EVERYTHING EXCEPT:

Sys Tray
Scan Registry

And leave check anything else you need.. aka, Antivirus, cable modem (if aplicable), firewall. Anything else... and I mean ANYTHING else is just JUNK that get loaded into you memory when windows starts up..and it will eat your performance.

Once you done, click APPLY, then OK, then restart computer. Check your resources then.

In my system I only have my firewall, my antivirus and my cable modem loaded up.. my sys resources are 97% free.

Also, remove any background wallpaper you may have, that steals resources too.

Hope you reading this as well Frenchy, mr I get 7fps in furball with a rig much better than mine

Hey Ding

You definately have a hardware issue..you know my system, celery433, 128ram,voodoo3 3000 16meg, sblive, ect. I never bog down into single digits frames. I get some frame rate hits in clouds like everyone else, and the smoke is a killer, but big furballs dont bog me down much at all...fleet ack goin off causes some stutter. I think it has to do with the puff of smoke(which as we all know kills frames) and your machine having to run sounds at the same time eating up vid memory /processors, taxing cpu, and running sounds at the same time.
I run at 600x800 and I know you run higher, so I think your just really taxing your machine beyond what is necessary. In short, IMO it's the fleet ack combined with the high res you run thats causing problems, not the map. BTW, I'm not crazy about this map either....I'd like to see a realistic BOB map with only 2 countries, more cloud layers and some weather at or near ground level to include wind effects. We have the capability of creating almost a perfect match geographically with reduced scale of course, realistic terrain skins and with weather effects. Seems a shame not to get it done.
Either way, AH is still the best game goin

Ok gang....maybe I didnt make myself clear.

The problem is with HUGE furballs like over a hotly contested airfield. Last nite by 7 there were probably 15-20 Nits taking off or capping the base and there were easily 20 rooks heading N from whatever base is south of 7. Add to that the flak puffs of our carrier just stationed off shore and my framerate would go from the 20's to the single digits (ok 10

) and vary in that range.

The problem seemed to be the microwarping of planes either due to the amount of info that had to pass over the net or the quickly changing framerates as I dove down into a hornets nest of activity.

Now you all can go ahead and say, "its a configuration problem" but at least on other maps, the front was spread out enough for those of us with "configuration problems" to go to areas that weren't as hotly contested.

So my distaste for this map is based upon the small frontal area and lack of combat options. If I had my choice, I'd rather engage a couple planes higher than me alone rather than be forced to grab mega alt so that I could be co-E in a mega-furball.

I guess Im having a hard time expressing what I dont like. Does that do a better job?

I have a 1GHZ PIII and GF2 64MB Ultra, 256MB RAM, usually run in 1600X1200X32, FSAA, etc etc...

Normally I run about 60 fps...but some of these furballs...ack bursts a fields smoke + 20-30 planes can drop me down to the 20's.

But it's mostly the smoke. That stuff could choke out a super computer.

Dingy, I don't think the problem is the map. It's the "lemming" mentality. Once one of those furballs gets going lots of folks just can't resist going in. I prefer to avoid furballs and either attack where the enemy isn't, or catch someone from the opposing side doing the same. I watched this morning (7AM Colorado time) while the furball you mentioned continued. The nits grabbed three bases on the other rook front basically unopposed. And that with me yelling for defenders. Oh well, we all pays our thirty simoleans and takes our chances.

You can find it at www.tweaknow.com. It's a very good utility that allows you to set RAM to be freed up every x minutes or whenever CPU usage is below x amount. It also lets you free up memory when your system first boots up (clearing out programs only initialized to load something).

Best of all, it's free!
