Oh, it's cold out in north Texas?

That's cute. It's starting to feel like spring here in Wisconsin, with a temperature of 12 degrees minus the wind chill.

On a more serious note: She did a good job on nabbing those ducks from the looks of it. I went out with my gun for deer but didn't see a damn thing.

Why would you wear all that camo stuff + camo paint to hunt ducks?

Doesn't that make you more likely to not be seen and possibly in danger from other hunters?

Do ducks have really good eyes when it comes to spotting humans pointing guns at them or something?

How do you make duck taste good? I had duck before, it was so oily it tasted like someone had soaked the meat in vegetable oil.

Valid questions. Ducks when flying in to a pond/lake like that one definitely circle around looking for any predators or something out of the ordinary. Yes camo is definitely necessary in the type of blind we were hunting. Even while camoed and painted up you can scare them away if you look up at them until you are ready to shoot. Day 2 we were hunting we were hunting in ground/layout type blinds which are these coffin style things all camoed up you pop out of and shoot. Also the more ducks you have flying in the greater the chance of getting busted.

There's really no danger from other hunters not with the group. This was private land but even when hunting public land the range on a shotgun is pretty limited. 70 yards and that shot is falling out of the sky. The potential danger from firearms is from other hunters in your specific group mishandling their shotguns. This is why everybody you go with needs to be a responsible hunter.

Ducks have plenty good enough eyesight to bust you if you don't do things right. They also have an aerial view of course. There are exceptions but you can ruin a hunt if you don't set up and hunt correctly.

These ducks are shot in the air flying while being called in to the decoy spread.

Finally the biggest financial supporter of Wetlands and Waterfowl Conservation is a group supported by hunters, called Ducks Unlimited. One of the main reasons there exists a really good population of ducks is because of responsible hunter support.

It can be nasty if not prepared correctly like any game meat. Hot and fast is a good general way. It's easy to overcook.

We made left over turkey, duck and Andouille sausage gumbo yesterday that was delicious. Had some more tonight.

sounds like you got a hold of some coot or merganser. fish-eating ducks are going to have an oily wang taste. ducks like those greenheads and redhead pictured eat seeds/grain and thus taste like little beef filets.  We just had some duck-k-bobs over the Thanksgiving week largely comprised of shoveler (aka spoonbills, aka "smilin' mallards"), teal and gadwall we bagged opening day. Mix that with some peppers, onions and sausage and you've got something!

Yes, you really have to camo up waterfowl hunting as they are looking down on you as they land. This isn't like pheasant or quail hunting where the hunters are actively flushing the birds out and you can get away with wearing highly visible clothing. the biggest safety issue is hearing protection being in such close proximity to other guns (as well as your own).

Neeley you certainly reminded me of a weekend at Maxwell Hall at United Armadillo Movement when we got tired of the cafeteria and there weren't many folks around.
