There is an old setup rule.  Well, It's not a rule, more like a guideline.  And every map is different.  Some are harder to bend to our wills.  But most times Bishops = Allied and Knights = Axis with CM country as Rooks.  It's a trick we use to upload the logs.

We had some B-29s over 72.. I was just over 27k and heading towards the 29s that looked considerably higher.

Just checked my film..  in the film it showed them at 25.5k... well below the 28k cap. Must be a perspective thing.

Ran some numbers for Frame 2 and was very surprised. Kinda because we had a tough go with the B17's we engaged. The P47M's they had as escort were numerous and good.  :salute

(unofficial)
Out of 30 B-29's (10 pilots), 20 were shot down.
Out of 75 B-17's (25 pilots), 26 were shot down. (think we got 6)
Out of 102 B-24's (34 pilots), 55 were shot down.
That's 101 bombers. Almost 1/2 of the 207 total bombers flying.
But only 16 out of 69 actual bomber pilots didn't successfully land.
Looks like they still had a high O.D. count though.
'Well Done' to the Axis that downed the B-29's. I humbly stand corrected by my initial thoughts, Bino.  :aok

With some adjusted numbers and targets, I wonder what single bombers would be like. (?)

Representing 15% of the B29 Casualties, let me shout out to the 68th Lightning Lancers for demonstration HOW to attack bombers. en Masse and VERY well coordinated.
Anybody who thinks bomber guns are overmodelled should fly with these guys..  then STFU.

At first the 24's we encountered looked high too. They weren't. Curvature of the earth maybe :)

We had the same illusion with some B-17s we were escorting. In the distance it looked as if they were above 30K when we first met them. Once we closed on them they were well below us.

Make sure to check your films before making accusations, If I remember right I was at 25,100ish when calibrated for target, and I don't remember any 24 being much higher then me.  Target alt was 25k for VF-17, if any of our guys were above that, it wasn't caught by me or the CO, otherwise it would have been immediately corrected.  Buffs always look to be higher then they actually are in most cases.

When we were on the attack approach I could hear friendlies saying bombers were over 30K.   When I picked up the formations they did indeed appear to be very high.  I was first ship in on the attack.  I flew through the entire stream of 24's on my first run.

No Allied Buffs were over the alt limit.  Not even close.

i checked the film after the FSO, the bombers were all around 25k. the only thing over 30k was the their skirts hiked up. the bombers themselves were just fine!
