Advantage shifts to armor - link fixed

In the long standing contest between air superiority and air defense it is about to shift to defense. As this happens ground forces lead by armor will take a much more important role in all combat.

boo

PS Bad link, give this one a shot

   Or perhaps Armored Ground Forces?

They have been working on this for awhiles. Such an operational system would shift the balance of power greatly in places like Korea where the threat of artillery is such a danger.

Actually it would be a hell of a game changer anywheres.

The Aviationist site had an article last week about USAF aircraft and laser pew pew's.  It stated that the DnD and the USAF said by 2025 they will be fielding high power lasers for airborne and ground targets on their tactical aircraft.  Having it work on vehicles like this is a pretty cool think as well.  Very fast recharge rates for the lasers now make them very capable for multiple targets or repeat shots for misses.  They've come a long ways from the Airborne Laser in that 747 that was testing a while back.

I agree with Rich, completely - artillery has always killed the lions share of the enemy during war since it's inception, and if all of a sudden a system comes around that can easily, accurately, and consistently zap the incoming rounds, it'll become irrelevant very quickly.  THAT will change the face of modern warfare, as much as it did when artillery first came around.

In 1980 I was stationed at an airbase that had an operational ABL on a 747 they were testing. Thats how long they have been at it. We used to find drones out in the desert with laser holes in them.

They'll just make a missile/arty round with a reflective/ablative surface.

Battlefield of the future will probably featured a lot of glow in the dark soldiers with all that millimeter wave radar scanning for incoming shells.

The way I see it, too expensive and easily countered.  The countermeasure is simple, decoys/jamming, or just simply overwhelming it with more targets than it can possibly shoot down in time.  It certainly won't change warfare in the near future.

Shooting decoys will tie up gun tubes otherwise used for arty rounds, which also accomplishes the task of reducing incoming. The technology will not only be used for mortars and artillery but also all types of missiles. It will be accompanied by precision counter artillery. The idea being we will be able to reduce theirs before they can ours and end up suffering far less casualties in the mean time.

Sure it will always be a race of tech vs tech. I dont have any idea how you would jam a laser. It would be kinda like jamming a rifle.

Its remarkable they have made this thing so small now and mounted on a single truck.

You don't have to jam the laser, just the radar that guides it.

Smoke.  You wait for the wind to be away from you and towards the enemy, then crank up the smoke generators. Laser light looses coherence very quickly in smoke and fog.  By the way, you don't have to jamb the high power laser; you only have to disrupt the low powered tracking laser used to keep the kill-beam on target.  The lower the power, the easier it is to disrupt it.

Or you simply mirror the surface.

Light, I'm led to believe, reflects off of mirrors.

Only a portion of light is reflected. Most mirrors or reflective coatings won't be near 100% reflected light.
