Rivet Patterns

Does anyone have, or know of, any line drawings that show the layout of the rivets on the F4Us? I've been trying to locate one but haven't had much luck.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Greebo did the default skin. You can trace his rivets with confidence.

Try to use the default bumpmap it helps a lot to detect rivets

That's what I've done, however there's places where it's hard to tell what's a rivet and what's part of the weathering. Also, the rivets tend not to show up on the white areas at all.

Some IL2 Skins have the correct rivets  but I  wouldn't always depends on their sins as some are fantasy sons that are either made up or  not correct.

Yeah, I have the IL-2 template for the F4Us, and a number of the rivets I know for certain are incorrect from comparison with what few sources I CAN find.

When I'm working out panel lines and rivets I'll try to get as many sources as possible and cross reference them. Some panel line diagrams are not very accurate and I use close up photos to check where possible. I can't remember offhand what sources I used on the F4Us as it was a few years ago I did the original ones. Other than books, the main source I use for this sort of stuff is this Russian site: http://www.airwar.ru/other/drawe.html

If you look at the bump maps on my default F4Us very carefully you will see the rivets marked as slightly darker rows of dots. I made them this faint because the F4Us used a lot of spot welding rather than rivets and these dots represented the slight depressions in the skin at each weld. If I was doing it again I'd make the dots darker and use the text file to reduce the effect of the bump map, but I was still figuring out bump mapping at the time I did these.

You may be able to isolate these dots on the bump map with a colour picker tool if the sensitivity is set close enough. Failing that I could send you a bmp with just the rivet/weld layer on it set at 100% opacity if you like.

As I understand it, the Corsair also had a lot of its rivets filled over, too, especially on the wings.

I'll check out your bump map on the default skins. A BMP with just the rivet/welds would be a big help, though, if it doesn't take too much of your time to grab. Thanks a lot!

If you need rivet layer bmps PM with an email address. Mention which of the F4Us you want them for as there may be some slight differences between the different variants.

If it helps any here is some photos I took of a corsair at the last B-25 gathering in Urbana Ohio.

What I found interesting was the lack of visibility of rivets even when I was right up on the aircraft.

Yeah, my understanding on the Corsair was that the rivets, particularly those on the wings, were generally faired over or sealed, so the effect would be very subtle.
