Do you own a "smart" appliance?
« on: January 18, 2014, 03:47:29 AM »
If you own an internet connected "smart" appliance you may have a botnet as well. :noid

Quote
"Proofpoint's findings reveal that cyber criminals have begun to commandeer home routers, smart appliances and other components of the Internet of Things and transform them into 'thingbots,'" to carry out the same kinds of attacks normally associated with personal computers.

The security firm that these appliances may become attractive targets for hackers because they often have less security than PCs or tablets.

Proofpoint said it documented the incidents between December 23 and January 6, which featured "waves of malicious email, typically sent in bursts of 100,000, three times per day, targeting enterprises and individuals worldwide."

More than 25 percent of the volume was sent by things that were not conventional laptops, desktop computers or mobile devices. No more than 10 emails were initiated from any single device, making the attack difficult to block based on location

Integrated home systems are the big thing now. Haven't you seen the commercial where Dad turns off the oven, lights, a/c, kitchen sink and sets the alarm all from his phone on vacation?

Sounds good. So when a hacker turns on your stove at night or when you were away, who is going to make that excuse to the insurance company if the house burns? :D

Yep would make a nice practical joke to turn off the heating at sub zero temps. House totaled, pretty much no way to know who did it.

crap a house will burn if the stove is on.  damn it, you should have mentioned that before.  I am removing the stove and throwing it away.  hey you think the water heater on 24/7 is a danger too?

I think this is pointed at the people that don't cook and use their stove as storage.  I know at least 2 people like this, one of them I turned on the stove to preheat it to keep a stack of delivered pizza's warm not knowing he stored all of his Tupperware in there. After 5 min I opened the door to put the food in and found a pool of melted plastic.  Took  many hours to chisel it all out.   :furious

Yeah in case you didn't know, a stove left on has started many fires. Sometimes people have stove gloves, towels etc. in the vicinity of stoves when they're not used. But at least you learned something new again!
