Getting SICK and TIRED of....
« on: January 29, 2001, 06:20:00 PM »
whoopeeED 2 WEEK FREEBIES WHO CAN'T READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Newby1: Who needs a gunner?
Newby2: Oh we can gun for other people?
Newby1: WHO NEEDS A GUNNER?
Newby3: I do!!
Newby1: How do I do it?
Newby3: I dunno..
Newby1: How do I gun for someone?
Newby1: HOW DO I GUN FOR SOMEONE?????????
Newby2: Who needs a gunner?
Newby4: How do I takeoff?
Newby5: How do I drop bombs?
Newby6: I need a gunner?
newby6: I NEED A GUNNER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Newby7: How do I start boat?
Newby8: Wow you can drive a boat?!!
Newby8: How do I drive a boat?
etc
etc
etc

Thats a typical 2 hour period in the MA, probably conservative as well...
Anyone else getting tired of this?
I think its time HTC instituted(suggestions):

1.  For your first 2 week period in AH, each time u start the program, you are immediately taken to the HTC help pages.

2.  Took more responsibility for helping new players.

3.  Added a ready room environment similar to AW, which were very good for players to help each other without doing it on MA comms.

4.  added a .squelch allthosewhohaven'treadhelppages command

5.  Create an HA arena for subscribers only

6. PERMANENT SQUELCH FILE!! I spend minutes squelchin ppl out of every login..

Seriously, I like to help people, but the constant bombardment and often times repitition of a question I just answered 30 seconds ago, is really getting annoying.  I am almost to the point of squelching anyone the typical newby questions.

Its taking a lot of the enjoyment outta the game for me.

Those new guys are HTC's business growing.  Also they make great targets for gunnery practice.  However I agree that it can get annoying.  I just tell them to click on the "help" button and read.

Yah, the new guys get a little wearing.

We're damned if we do and damned if we don't though.

If the whole community quits answering them, we'll get the "snobs" reputation.

If we answer one, 20 others chime in.

I try to answer one question from any one guy. The second question gets a polite suggestion to review the manual and "all (most) will be revealed."

The next question from the same guy gets a .squelch

Best I can do at present.

Oh, btw... Didn't someone here volunteer to put a PDF user manual together? I still think that's a fantastic idea... and something written with a new flyer's perspective in mind.

Who was that? Need any help? The current help pages are good, but a bit daunting... and abstract in terms of how all that info actually plays into things when ya find yerself in the MA for the first time.

Something written with alla the same info, but with the tone of "Ok, what you're going to want to do at this point is is bring up the map (esc key) and look for..."

It might be a good idea if when you dl the game , you cant enter MA till you log some time in the training arena or offline . One newbie last week said "real men don't read the manual" I guess real men just whine like little girls cause they can't get their tank to move .

Nash,

While an Acrobat help file would be great, there is a fundamental problem - too damn few will ever bother to read the manual.

It's one of the reasons there aren't manuals with software any more. It didn't take too many surveys to see that people just don't bother. This is probably (though this is just a guess) why HTC hasn't created this resource themselves.

It isn't just the newbies. I've stopped answering established players who want to know what is in the new update. "How fast and how high can you drop torps?" "What's new in this update?"

Many established players are just as guilty and pride themselves on their ignorance when the readme.txt file that has the changes in every update gets installed in the AH directory with the update. You tell them the answers are in the file and they tell you they don't have time to read it or they never read the manuals, etc. I guess it doesn't matter that their efforts are wasted if they drop torps too high or fast. They are just as happy either way.

Good help materials are good to have and would certainly help the people who would like to really know. Too many, however, both newbie and "experienced" just couldn't give a rat's ass.

And yes, it is very annoying. It would help if the installation would be a little more enthusiastic about information contained in the readme or help available to new pilots.

And as much as some probably consider me a candidate for their permanent squelch files, I think that is an excellent and long overdue feature that needs to be implemented.

So what if someone gets squelched and you never listen to them or re-enable their tranmissions? I think it would go a long way to making the sim more enjoyable.

But I for one am through helping the newbies or the players that refuse to educate themselves. Snob or not. The information is available and they could read it just the same as I and many others did.

The first corps of trainers were working on it. I did the comms page, and Indian did quite a few. Since then Ronni has pretty much done the help via the website.

They are out of date, but you get the idea...

Suggestion.. there's a free 2 week trial period. 1st week; system will ONLY let you into TA. Second week; Newbies graduate to MA for 'finishing school'.

Exception.. paid account from the get-go.

How's that?

Umm...

Nowhere in the initial 1.05 Readme is any mention made of air-dropped torps whatsoever, much less use parameters for them :-)

And no mention is made of them in the help files (I believe, please correct me if I'm wrong.)

There is an AWFUL lot of important game info one is only going to find out by doing searches on the bulletin boards or asking Hitech when he's on-line and "blue".

Or asking on the open channel in MA.

Regarding stupid newbie questions, yes the newbies are irritating, but overall people need to be a hair nicer to them, I think. But if they persist in annoying stupidity I certainly agree with ignoring them.

Had a guy ask about getting the PT started, etc. Told him how.

Then asked if I wanted to "gun" for him, and I patiently explained there's no real reason for two people in a PT, it's rarely done, and you're unlikely to find anyone to "gun"  for you on a PT because you can steer a PT with rudder pedals and shoot at the same time. People would rather just take their own PT.

Guy asked me to "gun" for him 2 more times after that. Finally just ignored him.
