Best for the game - XP or Vista
« on: March 02, 2014, 04:03:54 PM »
Thinking of reformatting the hard drive.

Should I say "Hasts la vista, Vista" and go with XP?

I've a feeling there wouldn't be much difference but thought I'd ask here first.

Cheers

XP would be my choice but support for it ends next month. Why not Win 7?

Alot depends on the OS and system,if you use 32bit vista then I would just go with XP if you dont have more than 4 gigs of ram. If you have more than 4 gigs of ram,you need to include the Vram also then I would go with vista 64 but as Max said why not just use win7.

I have an older comp that has vista64,got ti when vista was first released and after I got it setup how I wanted it it`s been a very stable machine. When Vista first came out there were alot of driver issues, these days not so much!

  YMMV.

Thanks for the replies!

I was thinking of either xp or Vista because I have the discs (and I'm cheap).  Besides, if I buy a newer version of Windows, that will only encourage them.

(Just checked Amazon for Windows7 and they have 8 for the same price.  Any reason you guys like 7 better?)

Cheers!

Windows 7 is built for a desktop, whereas Windows 8 is a more tablet based OS. I loathe Windows 8.

vista is a poor gaming platform. short of spending $70 on W7, do a clean install of xp, sp's and hope for the best

I agree with Max, for the most part... I've even been burned by a relative on something like this as well as some good friends of mine... Offering an old MS Office Pro 2000, or 2003 at discounted pricing, telling me he dealt in software ... bought bulk and purchased in bulk licensing blocks.....

I reported him to MS.... Never recovered any money and ended up buying it all over again from a local store....

Be weary of software deals to good to be real!

Good Luck and go with Windows 7 ( home premium version  or Professional version ) 64 bit OS, if you can....

Go with Windows 7. I do not recommend installing XP because microsoft is ending support of XP on April 8th of this year. That means no more updates and they are not letting xp machines download Security Essentials. The ones that already have Security Essentials will receive updates for a limited time. Bite the bullet and install Windows 7 home premium and be happy (assuming your hardware meets the minimum requirements for W7).

End of support notice from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-support-help?SEMID=1&WT.srch=1&ocid=XPEOS_SEM_google_FAM_WINDOWS_BRAND_NULL_LEARN_microsoft%20xp&wt.mc_id=XPEOS_SEM_google_FAM_WINDOWS_BRAND_NULL_LEARN_microsoft%20xp

Minimum requirements for W7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements

For an older gaming computer XP still works but you should not use that machine for anything but games after that. No internet surfing, no e-mail, no banking. You can dual boot to linux if you want a secure surfing / banking OS on the side of XP.

Oh and IF you choose to install XP, make sure your modem has firewall or at least NAT enabled, otherwise you won't get past install and it's infected.

Nor did I. Nothing Ripley stated is untrue.
