Tinted goggles were used.

I have two pair of gunners goggles that used polarized lenses that could be adjusted to provide variable density.

"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

Sunglasses Mode = Complete Gray Green mask over your game screen session cutting down the current lumen factor appropriately. The gunsight reflector plate in the F4U-1A is a good preview of what it should be like.

Then at 12 noon your gamma control along with a dominant gray green tint to everything should be reduced to about 3 to 4 pm game light equivalent. Along with all of the loss of ability to discern your target from the ground clutter or ocean without the aid of Full Zoom. Some of the same problems looking through the F4U reflector plate.

You can get another preview of this by upping the blue factor at your desktop color control, then in game reducing your gamma a few points.

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.
