Erratic Ping Test results

Not sure if this is the right room to post this issue. My apologies to the the moderators, if it is.

Over the past 4 months, I have been getting this (see attached) erratic ping test result.

Been playing this game since 2001, and I have always had a nice flat, straight line, when I ran this test. Up until last Dec.

I've totally ruled out my system, as when I connect to the Aces High server on my neighbors home connection (same ISP)..... I get the same erratic ping test results. So the problem lies somewhere between our houses and the server (HTC) in Texas.

Could someone from the Toronto, Canada area please let me know if they are seeing the same result when running the ping test? Or....maybe someone could shed some light on what might be causing this issue.

Only ten samples with 20% packet loss at that one hop.  There is the problem.  I'll have to get back in the office to do further testing to determine who owns that router.

It will be causing you a lot of problems, if it is consistently losing that many packets.

Ok... let me know. I have the senior techs at my ISP (Rogers) scratching their heads on this one.

Show them the Pingplot and see if they can help isolate that router.

Well....after several weeks of back n forth, my ISP says..."Nothing wrong with our equipment".  

Seems I am stuck with this connection issue, unless I switch ISP's. Only problem is.......my current one is the only cable provider in my area.

Is there was a way to force the path or to tailor the route between my computer and the HT server?

This way I could block out the router that is causing me grief.

If you are only dealing with the local support people, they will only look at your local connection.

Your contract with them will also only state they only have to provide the local connection.

The only hope you have is it escalate it beyond the first level support people.

Yes, I had two... level 2 techs on the job. They ran tests from their office and could not duplicate the packet loss at their router. When they came to my house...they then seen what I was seeing and they said they would pass their findings up the chain.

Of course....after waiting a week, the top level techs said they ran tests and could not see the issue. As far as they were concerned, problem did not exist. Of course...because when they run tests from the ISP's offices, the problem cannot be seen. Only from my home does it show up.

So exhausting dealing with these people. You have to tell your story over and over and all they do is say...no fault found.

Calling then back today. Going to make this a project of mine, as I have no other course of action.

Well... here I am...one year later and still having this issue.

But!!  I've at least identified what the issue is, and thought it would be productive to post what I found out is happening to my connection.

What is happening on my cable line is called "jitters". Apparently a common problem on some cable connections.

If you go to http://www.pingtest.net/, you will get results to show you the amount of jitter on your line. Jitter does not effect up/down load speeds........but kicks the crap out of ones gaming experience.

I have a NEW ISP lined up for a install later this week. It's DSL.......but at least they offer a "clean" line.

Looking forward to being "back in business".
