What are these antennas around a flight deck
« on: June 02, 2014, 02:34:36 PM »
I see this on carriers:

Sort of "Mustache" around the flight deck - sort of antennas or fishing rods, what are these?

I assume they aren't for fishing  ;)

they are just general antenna..They are an old system...i do believe they are being done away with for a newer HF antenna type...they are just horizontal for flight ops.....which this pics is supposed to depict...however it is very quiet on deck....looks like the navy does selfies too  hahaha

they are drag lines.  They're trying to catch supper.  jeeesch, doncha know anything???  ;)

Actually, I do not know.  But the educated guess-imator in me thinks they have to do with communications.

I believe this is correct.  The antennae are lowered, as is the surrounding deck fence, during flight operations.

I was aboard the Eisenhower CVN69 for almost three years. While I do not know what the antennas are for the only time they are in the up position was as we left or returned to port. Any time there might be a chance of OPS was the first time they went out flat, and didn't come up again until OPS was done and we were pulling back in.

As for a deck fence, we didn't have one any where. They did have a catch fence that was laid out flat under and around the cat walks. Of course we all knew that if a jet blew you over the side the only thing the fences were going to catch was the goop that didn't drip off. Picture an "auto chum maker"  :devil

Then I stand corrected!

On USN carriers they are AT-1022/SR radio two piece 35 foot HF whip antennae.  They are in the down position when underway, and lifted vertical when in close confines.
