my favorite part of this is the 5 people saying " ya its not weird he knew exactly where the goon was 35 miles away from the base" from experience i can take off and given a 360 degrees perimeter around town that extends out atleast 35 miles..... experience tells me exactly where to fly to find the goon. its amazing since we staged the goon away from the main route of the base and there were no friendly targets around him and the goon was not in a dar ring but yep experience leads you to them everytime lol. "excuse me sir i want some of what he is having"...i must not be eating enough wheaties.

Speaking of dar bar, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to register in certain cases until I'm within a certain distance of an enemy plane. For example, if the Bish are hoarding a base I will often fly to the next base to interdict the reinforcements. However, the whole time I'm flying there, no dar bar is showing, only for me to arrive on scene, have the dar bar change, and then spot 3 cons well above the dar bar alt. In other words they were climbing out without dar bar showing until I got within a certain range of them. Is there any explanation for this phenomenon?

Yeah it is a dar bar glitch.
A lot have complained about it but HTC hasn't fixed it yet.

Drives me insane to have a dar bar pop up out of no where when I am climbing just to see that the dar bar is a contact higher than me.

That's one of several incarnations of the darbar bug a lot of us are pointing out for years now - darbar only registering when a con/mission enters visual range or is hitting a (working) darbar. I had been racing on the deck to intercept supposed "noe" strat raiders on tagma which suddenly turned out to fly at 20k.
I have seen a pair of friendly bombers flying across the map at 25k to enemy strats without showing any green dar to me at all. I've been jumped by enemy fighters at 20+k which triggered a darbar only the moment they came in view.

Or yesterday: I had a green darbar moving across the top sectors of the map without any friendly con being actually flying up there.

Depending on where you are, and what the radar conditions are, this is possible.
There is Tower range, that will trigger radar settings within the tower ring, Full radar, which is controlled by the HQ, and Range, which is triggered by a plane being near you, it's your personal radar.  If you are outside of a functioning radar ring, and out of the coverage the HQ provides, you will get Range when they come near you.

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

Well, first of all I'm talking strictly about the MA, which has consistent settings.
Second, and most importantly, the effect is totally random, happens only occasionally and has no consistence at all. I can see debars moving across the map all the time at any range (that's been my main means of spotting long range high alt bombers). And then, all off a sudden, there are one or two specific friendly cons at altitude that do not make ANY darbar for me... while everyone else all across the map does.
Darbar jumping up only when enemy cons get into view at 20k is also an occasional, highly erratic 'feature'. There is no logic of game mechanics behind it, it's all a bug, up top the very obvious "phantom darbar" effect.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.
