Xaivier: Repost Historic Gunsight Pack and Manuals
« on: June 25, 2014, 04:43:57 PM »
Xaivier requested a new link because my file host ages links based on use.

There are readme files in each country folder to help associate reticles to aircraft.

1. - Unzip this file to some place on your hard drive then copy files into the game's sights directory.

2. - Each gunsight.bmp must be copied with it's gunsight.mil size control file to the sights directory.

3. - The size control file allows you to make the gunsight smaller or larger than it's default historic size. The readme for the zip file explains this. Each mil file can be opened in "Notepad" to change the control number along with notes inside of the file explaining how.

The gunsight rings are sized to 2pixel = 1Mil. In the game this means the gunsights are sized correctly for each historic gunsight. I've included gunnery manuals to help explain the reason for the average diameter of 100Mil as the main ring. There is a "Dot" folder full of dot gunsights for those who don't care otherwise.

Russia was very progressive about sticking a gunsight in everything. All of the fighters used in ww2 either had a telescope gunsight early on or some version of the PAK or PBP family. Early optics and the reflector plates were not very good in terms of useful FoV. So anecdotally pilots would have done better drawing a circle on the wind screen. The IL2 Type3 we have in the game used either an external iron bead on a post or a drawn ring in the center of the bullet proof glass diamond in front of the pilots face. The recoil from the two NS-37 made aiming a matter of getting close and the rounds would hit inside of the circle at about 200m.

The IL-2 had a drawn ring with range markers for shallow glide bombing. Testing showed the IL-2 had lethal issues with pull out diving at tradition dive bombing angles. In these pictures you see two kinds of bombing guides. The first is white curves painted on the cowling for 100, 200, 300 meters. The pilot would fly along at those alts until seeing a target. Then he would dive at the target in a shallow dive while counting then release. The top picture shows two horizontal lines as rear aids. In the bottom picture you see the front post and the drawn rings with range numbers. The PBP gunsight inside of the cockpit was dangerous to the pilot if used for shallow glide bombing. It was used for gunnery.
