Tom and Jerry were racists???
« on: October 01, 2014, 08:01:38 AM »
Amazon is now streaming the old Tom and Jerry cartoons.  Unfortunately these cartoons which are fine for kids to watch come with a list of warnings because they glamorize smoking, violence and racism.
 :furious
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

What about a warning in case the word bacon is used in one of the cartoons?  It would be a real shame if someone got offended.
"Then out spake brave Horatius, the Captain of the gate:
To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds.
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."

How dare you!  There is only one race that's racist.  All the other races treat every other race equally with color-blind love and respect.

Could you imagine what would happen if a similar movie called Black Chicks were made?  Civil War would break out.

Loonie Toons is also a bit on the racist side, though I can't say I've ever seen any sort of racism in Tom and Jerry...

The example in the video is more of a stereotype than racist idea.

Racial stereotyping is racism, and in this case the racial stereotype is that of a "mammy".

The term is rarely used in contemporary times and is generally considered an ethnic slur in the United States yet in the American South it still remains (along with "Aunt" and "Uncle") a term indicating affection and respect.

You know what's funny, I don't think anyone considers it a racial slur. I have never even heard the term "mammy" used in my entire life. I think I will bow out of this thread now before I get into trouble. I have a feeling I'm on Skuzzy's naughty list anyway. :salute

Well I, who's half a world away, knows the term. The last time I can remember hearing it used was in the Shatner Roast where Lisa Lampanelli used it against Nichelle Nichols. I love racist jokes and know some quite nasty ones myself, however I don't think they are particularly well suited for children's programming.

Those shorts AREN'T children's programming. They were originally made as filler to entertain theater audiences between films, intercut with newsreels.

If they're treated as children's programming NOW it's because stupid people have decided that cartoon = made for kids.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
