Personally, I don't really care about the lightsaber. It's the X-wing redesign that I'm not fond of. The way the wing scissors open just ends up looking awkward.

If you wanted to "modernize it", use the K-Wing, E-Wing, or any of the myriad of other new designs introduced in the Extended Universe rather than raping an original design. THAT really bothers me, and I'm afraid of what else they're going to contradict.

Everything.  I have nearly every book published in the Star Wars line, and there are some absolutely amazing stories in there.
The producers were stating early on that they will not be following any of the existing lines, it's a complete revision to what happened in the existing story lines.  
Probably something to do with royalties for all of those who helped contribute to the Star Wars "Universe".  Literally hundreds of authors have all contributed in one way or another to the evolution of the movie tie ins and back stories.  This will be a reason to kick off an entirely new line of movies, characters, and books just like they did with Star Trek.
Will it be good?  Who knows, probably going to be great for first viewers, might even be good if I can avoid the frustration of years of story lines being absolutely worthless

Most of the EU was garbage. If it had Kevin J. Anderon's name on it, it wasn't fit for toilet paper. The Bantam books had some outright AWFUL (Crystal Star) to just plain WEIRD (Planet of Twilight; holy crap, I think the author may have been ON it when she came up with this idea) books, others that completely disregarded the rules of how things worked in-universe (Black Fleet Crisis), and characters you just wanted to strangle (Callista. And pretty much EVERYONE Anderson came up with. I wanted Kyp Durron to die horribly LONG before NJO dial his oscar-hattery up to eleven). Karen Traviss turned the Mandalorians into just about the worst gang of Mary Sues since the Bat Family (which is pretty impressive considering Batman and Cassie Cain are probably THE two worst Mary Sues in comics all by themselves). New Jedi Order read like someone slapped the Star Wars name on an entirely different franchise. Legacy of the Force was outright ridiculous: Jacen "Contemplate Our Navels" Solo as a Sith Lord? Daala -- THE most incompetent Imperial command officer IN THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE (which is saying a LOT), and who PMSed her way through one half-baked plot after another, oh, and who was also a WANTED WAR CRIMINAL (you think I'm joking? EVERY BOOK SHE WAS IN ended with her crying over a tub of ice cream) -- getting elected president? You have GOT to be kidding me.

Frankly, the fact that the EU has been wiped from continuity is about the only universally GOOD news to come from Disney's involvement.

The Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire / Dark Force Rising / The Last Command) is THE best Star Wars story since The Empire Strikes Back. Timothy Zahn absolutely NAILED it. Hell, his hints about the Clone Wars were FAR and away better than what Lucas came up with. He even got to name the Republic/Imperial capital (the very first MENTION of Coruscant was in Heir to the Empire).

The X-Wing series was actually very well-done, with lots of fun Easter Eggs (@#$%ing Redemption Mission...) and did a wonderful job fleshing out secondary film characters like Wedge, Tycho, Hobbie and Jansen. There was a heightened sense of danger because you weren't dealing with any major characters so you there was a genuine possibility of characters dying (but without overdoing it, unlike SOME writers *cough*Martin*cough*), and Stackpole (who's an easy #2 on the list of best Star Wars writers) worked very closely with Zahn, which is why their respective books mesh together so well, and actually FEEL like they're part of one universe, while most of the rest of the EU authors just did whatever the hell they wanted, which helped greatly contribute to the very disjointed feel of the EU. (Stackpole's I, Jedi and Zahn's Hand of Thrawn Duology even work together as a pseudo-trilogy).

And Allston's books in the series were HILARIOUS. The Ewok Pilot running gag especially had me in stitches, but it was also the Wraiths' general insanity. Also, Jansen, full stop.
