Gaming Headset or Sound card?

I have a Logitech G35 gaming surround-sound headset and it's pretty awesome.  I'm also using the on-board sound - but I'm curious, is the sound being driven by my gaming headset or the onboard sound?  If I put a Sound Blaster Z and disable the onboard, will the gaming headset take advantage of the sound card processing or is it the drivers and gaming headset doing to sound driving?

Unfortunately i can say this.. you are not using the on-board sound. When you installed the drivers you are using the USB for your sound. For you to take advantage of an on board sound card you must be plugged into the sound card itself. So if you get the new sound card you need a headset with 3.5 mm jacks and plugged directly into the sound card.

the g35 has it's own "sound card".  if you want to use a separate sound card then you need a new headset.  and if I may, i would recomment the kave http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826436005&ignorebbr=1 I had one but me stupidly returned it to get the tianman since i wanted 7.1 sound.  had a hell of a time finding a 7.1 sound card worth  it's money.  and cannot really hear 7.1 sound anyway, it sounds more like 5.1

just get sound splitters like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6J32NM2783&cm_re=y_splitter-_-9SIA6J32NM2783-_-Product  so you can connect both your speakers and your headset to the same sound card.  then just turn off the speaker if you are using a headset.

I have the Logitech G430 and it has a separate USB connector with 2x3.5mm jacks. I can either use USB or connect the headphones directly to analog ports. Best from both worlds.

Unfortunately the G35 doesn't seem to share this feature.

It's a USB headset so it acts as its own sound card instead of using the dedicated or onboard sound you have.  The good thing about having a USB head set is that you can set it up in game so that you hear vox through your headset and game sounds through your regular desktop speakers.

I had tge G35 usb headphones it was very nice for games and media.

I bought a kave 5.1 and it is better than the G35, direction wise of planes around you.

Being 5.1 you need a 5 socket card.

I would have 5.1 speakers but if my mrs finds out i socialise with colonials i will be chatised.

Fork, if you're going to move away from your onboard soundcard headset (that Logitech isn't a bad headset by any means), and go to a sound card (The SoundBlaster Z is the best bang/$ for a PCI-E card IMO, and many others here agree), if you have the $, you may as well take full advantage of that SB card IMO.

With the sound card, you're looking at around 300$+ to do this, but it's SO worth it IMO.  Barring that, and you just want to go the soundcard route with the Soundblaster Z, get a really good headSET with built in microphone.  IMO Sennheiser or Roccat are both a good option here, but honestly, for the extra 100$, get those Sony or a similar brand headphone, and the stand alone broadcast quality mic.  Chalenge gave this advice a few months back, and I took a shot at it - fantastic.  I just need set it up with my main gaming machine now, as the missus has taken the Sony phones and Blue mic for her system.  I've used it a fair bit on her machine, and its far, far better than the onboard sound card with my Sabertooth MB using a SteelSeries headset with built in mic.

I like it, it works pretty good and has good sound quality.  The only pisser about the headset it is that it occasionally loses the signal and you have to reset it.

Wireless is not very good

I had mixed emotions about wireless so I went with the G 35 !!

I like the idea of wireless, and checked out some Sennheiser wireless phones, but my issue is since I'm going to have a cable running from my head already with the TrackIR, wth is the point in having wireless phones, and spending the extra $ that they cost, and deal with the negatives like charging/batteries, and interference and such.  If they ever make a wireless TrackIR, I'll be going wireless headphones then as well.

To take advantage of my Creative zX sound card, I use the ROCCAT Kave 5.1 (not the 5.1 Digital, with it's built-in sound card).  I have been nothing but happy with my purchase.
