Best OS
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:49:18 AM »
With all the available Windows OS's out there, 7,8,10. What is the best OS to use now? I am currently running an old Acer Dual Core 4850e at 2.5 Ghz with Vista. Not having any problems, but I am looking at doing a Build in the not to distant future. WOuld be nice to use an OS that I could use on my current machine also. :headscratch:

Windows 7 is pretty good, 2 of the 3 computers in my house run it right now. All the computers at my school run it. It's pretty solid all the way through.

I can't stand windows 8, stay away from it.

Windows 10 is still in development, and the OS is set to expire at the end of April (if I remember correctly). Looking past the little hiccups that are expected from an OS that's still in development, it's actually a pretty good OS. 10 is like a better version of 7 with some elements of 8 thrown in. It's currently my favorite of the 3.

Windows 7 64-bit as of this moment is the best in my opinion.

Eventually, we will all be forced onto W10, but with the advent of HaloLens I am actually looking forward to it. That is, if the device is like nothing else MS has ever made and they continue to support it through future iterations (and there will have to be future iterations for it to provide actual benefit). At this point it seems to have a lot more promise than Oculus Rift ever had, but still way, way off in the future.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

They are saying it will be available in fall of this year, they didn't get any more specific than that.

I guess it wouldn't matter if since you are building a computer from scratch, but they are also offering a free upgrade for 7 and 8 users during the first year of it's release.

Windows 8.1 with Classic shell is the "best" currently. I however run 7 on my machines.

The OS you chose is most dependent on the hardware drivers you can find.  Using Win 10 on my Dell Inspire 1501 with ATI 1150 Xpress is frustrating at times because the newest driver available is for Vista which leads to compatibility problems.

I believe skuzzy already mentioned a few months ago that windows 7 was probably gonna be his last windows os he buys.  it has to do with privacy.

Personally, Windows 7 is my last OS from Microsoft.

That said, no one should ever consider using a Microsoft operating system until they get service pack one out the door.

Remember when Vista was released and everyone said it was the best? We all know where that went.
Remember when Windows 7 came out and it was the best?  It sucked until SP1 was released.  Heck they just fixed a memory leak in the desktop shell, which has been an issue since the OS was released!
Windows 8 was the first Microsoft OS which was only lauded as the next best thing for a few weeks.  Proving there is hope.
Now with Windows 10, we are back to hearing about how it is the best thing since sliced bread and it is still in development.

While we have to make sure the game runs on Windows 10, we will be installing it and testing with it, after it becomes a real product.  Right now Windows 10 is a noisy blip on the radar.  Once it is really released, then we will be looking at it.

Right now the most stable and best released OS from Microsoft is Windows 7 64 bit.

I remember the installation screens of 95, 95, ME, 2000... Each one saying that I was currently installing the best Windows ever! And the arguing about not changing from 98 to XP because the latter would suck in AH.

Built my rig for XP about seven years ago and migrated to Win 7 64 bit last fall, doubling the amount of system RAM with a second hand kit. If your computer was designed to run Vista reasonably well, you should be able to change to seven without issues and see some performance and stability improvement.

Not even Microsoft wants everyone on 8 which is why they are rushing 10 and telling everyone it will be free to 7 and 8 users for its first year.  Fortunately for those who like 7 it doesn't truly expire until January 14, 2020.  Perhaps by then Win 12 or 14 will be less about touchy-feelie app sales and more about just making hardware and software operate well.  Probably not.   :bhead

I believe that, after reading some IT opinions, Win10 will be the last stand alone, not internet based OS. It's been said that Win 10 will be a continuously updated Os,a "work in progress". I will find the article and provide the link, so that I don't look like an idiot. It's been rumored for years that MS will eventually make their OSes internet based, so that they can't be patched and used for free.
Found it !

One never knows what Microsoft is liable to do.  They hinted at the possibility of releasing the core operating system source code to the world and going open source in a recent interview.

One gets the idea Microsoft would like to get out of the operating system business as they are firmly convinced the bulk of their future revenue is going to be cloud based.  If their financial projections hold true they stand to make more money off the cloud service than sales of the operating system in the near future.
