I actually agree with floob to a certain extent - vicious, cruel and degrading images, often of very young girls, have been a "thing" in manga for bloody decades. I used to see guys "reading" them in the subway on the morning commute in a previous lifetime. Manga have also been excluded from kiddie-p laws in Japan, partly as a result of pressure from publishers, who make a mint off the damn things. Similarly, there's all too many animations in which story and character development are secondary to underwear.
I guess it's rather like photography - subjects can range from the sacred to the profane, not the fault of the sacred that the profane exists.
That said, there are still some legitimately mind-blowing Japanime out there, well worth watching.
