So do you bring your dates home to watch Rick and Morty?
My dates are attractive women, they lack the mentation to appreciate highbrow or conceptual humor.

The books I mentioned have illustrations that are used to add another layer of storytelling. They employ symbolism, color, shot composition and visual style to reinforce the themes of the story, not "to appease the simple".

If you have issues with science fiction and fantasy, or superheroes, that's another argument entirely. Suffice it to say that there are books and films in the genre that are easily worthy of serious exploration. That being said, here's a list of non-superhero graphic novels:

Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki. A semi-autobiographical account of the last weeks of a Japanese Infantry unit during World War II.

Maus considered one of the most important works on the Holocaust. The true story of Art Spiegleman's relationship with his holocaust survivor father, and a re-telling of the horrors his father experienced during the war.

Perisopolis The story of a young girl and her family's experiences as they are caught up in the Iran-Iraq war and are forced to flee to the West.

From Hell Alan Moore's take on Jack the Ripper and the bloody birth of the 20th century.

Hehe, graphic novel, storyboard. . . might as well just call Frank Miller a pedophile straight up (which he is not).

Ronin, Daredevil, Elektra. . .
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Anime has been steering deep into soft porn for the last 15 years to keep an audience. Japan has a problem with males of all ages and their favorite female anime characters. Hero's and love interests seem to dominate a spectrum of sisters to the girl next door to the evil female enemy who is jaw dropping while always well dressed for a porno book signing tour. Keeps the boys buying media. Maybe that is what he cannot get past. There is more adult fair or very deep and real issues depressing fair if he wants to look for it. I just like seeing the realllyyyy evill bad guys get it really horribly in the end after an epic good versus evil destruction romp for a few hours in a movie or 24-52 weeks in episodes.

The art work, morality play, and exploration of the human condition in Japanese anime is often superior to the simple minded castrated pabulum we are fed here in the US from the main stream animation market. But, in Japan there seems no problem mixing panty shots of a sweating big breasted younger sister while exterminating evil vampires with her big brother hero together in a church.........

Many anime remind me of the morality play of American movies from the 30's until the 60's when good and evil were turned into, it's only evil if you aren't one of us. Anime tends to make an obvious distinction early on which kind of morality play the story line was constructed around.

Maybe he should stick to anime like the Tenchi Muyo series.

I mean one that's not about a fictional super hero or some other bathos escapism and doesn't have illustrations to appease the simple.

Try Five Centimeters per Second.

If you actually think for a minute about the subjects it covers, and the experience of each character, and the questions and realizations they have, I think you'll like it.

I'm no fan of anime, or comics (I've never read a comic book, and have no desire to. Not that there's anything wrong with them, I just don't like the presentation. I prefer a true novel over a movie anyway, and I find comics are closer to movies than books) but I think you're painting with a rather broad brush here...

I WILL admit I loved the Gundam Wing series.

I actually agree with floob to a certain extent - vicious, cruel and degrading images, often of very young girls, have been a "thing" in manga for bloody decades. I used to see guys "reading" them in the subway on the morning commute in a previous lifetime. Manga have also been excluded from kiddie-p laws in Japan, partly as a result of pressure from publishers, who make a mint off the damn things. Similarly, there's all too many animations in which story and character development are secondary to underwear.

I guess it's rather like photography - subjects can range from the sacred to the profane, not the fault of the sacred that the profane exists.

That said, there are still some legitimately mind-blowing Japanime out there, well worth watching.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Absolutely true and a very good list of examples! I would just like to add that you should all check out "Nekopara". It is by far the greatest visual novel I have ever seen come out of Japan. Truly it is a great masterpiece for ages to come!!

Let me direct you to a site called My Anime List. It's filled with some of the worse degenerates that anime has to offer.

On the other hand, it also has some of the nicest people anime has to offer.

I'm not sure if it's because I had good classical literature and composition teachers or if it's because I'm not a loser, but I really hate that children's literature and children's cinema has become a mainstream product for adult consumers.

You think anime is for kids? Allow me to direct you to the following series:

-Akira
-Btoom
-Blood Plus
-Cowboy Bebop
-Darker than Black
-Elfen Lied
-Psycho Pass
-Pasyte
-Tokyo Ghoul

To name a few, none of witch are meant for kids because of their severe violence, dark plots, profane language and overall adult themes.
