A little too close to home.
« on: August 26, 2015, 02:22:08 PM »
As some of you know I'm a station manager for WMDV 44.1, a TV station in southern Virginia. Today a TV crew for WDBJ 7 was killed while doing a live remote in a town north of where I work.

I'm in a state of shock.

The reporter that was killed, Allison Parker, was someone I had met at local events in the past. I also worked closely with her father, Andy Parker, on a regular basis, in fact we did an interview with him yesterday. He was so proud when his daughter became a reporter.

It's going to be a long day.

We are just a little north of you.  The news stories we are seeing are heartbreaking.

My condolences to the families.

I hope that you figure out a way to make it through the day without too much pain.

Peace

I saw the video the shooter made during the attack.  This is so sad.

Such a tragedy!

I've been reading about and watched the video. Such a shame for these people, and so scary to boot. I felt really bad watching it.

All because of racism. Jesus Christ!

So sad. An ex unstable (to be polite) employee of the station was the shooter.

Another workplace violence act. I blame America's cultural society we've developed into a "It's all about MEEEE! I'm a VICTIM" mentality but at the risk of going political, I'll leave it at that.

Heart felt condolences to the parents and family of these two.

terrible news. You wouldn't think that news anchors and crew need to be in their "military zone" gear on home soil....

A terrible crime committed by a coward. It reminds me of a terrible event I myself witnessed some years ago.

I suspect over the short and long run....there will be conversations between station GMs and NDs all over the country about measures that can or cannot be taken to better secure news journalists doing their job....with special emphasis on more dangerous assignments....but that is what makes this one so very heartbreaking....it was a simple remote...rather than some far more dangerous gang story coverage...   the entire thing just makes my heart break.

I'm not sure that their occupation put them at any higher risk in this particular situation.  The shooter could have been a former car salesman, plumber, landscaper, etc and carried out the attack in one of those work places.
