Very interesting. I just picked up unity today to play with over the winter for non flight sim reasons. Looks like something to do over the winter. I'll check out blender too. I have a programming background (it's what I do for a living) but I'm not artistic at all.

seems to me your attitude will lead to your success no matter what anyone else thinks  or what your background is.  I'm all self taught as well. Pretty sure you can do anything you set your mind to.  :aok

ty

Heres what I feel you should look into then.
Unity 5.2
uFS - Flight Simulation Engine
Blender 2.76
GIMP 2.8
All are free to play with except the Unity add-on I listed. I am familiar with GIMP and now Blender. I will not buy the add-on until I prove to myself I will use it. The other stuff would have to be purchased if something was created and made commercial.

I know it cannot be accomplished easily or alone.

Beware, you tube gave me the cryptoware virus. Looks like I have to do a total re-install of OS.
Its in, AH files, pic files...unity files, temp files, blender files, Microsoft files,  its everywhere, its on the other drives as well.

I got this using  you tube, malwarebytes premium did nothing, it deleted all my restore files as well. Gonna loose everything on pc for a clean install, so beware. Cannot even contact you tube to complain.

I cannot remember which you tube video did this. so I can get it again

You more than likely got cryptoware in an email. You chance clicking on links from folks you do not know. Even from folks you do know if the email seems unusual from them. The online types you simply control + alt + del out of it.

Nice work. For some reason I can't wrap my head around modeling planes; they always come out looking really wrong.  Mechs and starwars stuff I can do, but not planes.

Tip of the hat to ya
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

While Blender is very capable you might also look up GMax, which is free and can be used to make models for FSX (even the Steam version) Train Simulator, and others. It has everything you need without the convoluted menus of Blender. Keep it simple. If you don't like it then you still have Blender.

Blenders not convoluted, it just covers so many forms of 3D artwork that its GUI is very intimidating. Focusing on 1 aspect of its capabilities and honing that is the approach. The plane mesh I posted was just the beginning. Planes are my focused aspect, look what was possible from me after just 2 weeks....................I have zero training. its also free.

something I learned using blender. did you know that the middle scroll wheel on an ms mouse is also a middle button? never had a clue till a blender aircraft modeling tut mentioned it.

Hehe, the very definition of convoluted. The industry standard is 3DS Max, which is what GMax is based on (stripped down from).

I did this tank in 3DS Max 2016. Closer to Christmas I will update the textures with actual substances and begin work on the crew.

I also have a soldier and an airplane built, but I think no one here wants to see them.

Chalenge. Which engine are you using for the screenshot of that very nice looking tank? Also, does the tank feature any code or is it mesh only?

I wouldn't mind seeing your other projects. In fact I've been working on a few projects myself. One of which, being a plane. The model is being done by a friend of mine and I'm coding some features for it. For example: Landing gear, flaps, lights, canopy, cowling flaps, etc.

My last project was creating A.I turret.

This is pure 3DS Max 2016 with a Listener Script used to populate the track and allow it to move properly for a given distance traveled. The rendering system is Nvidia Mental Ray. At the time that this image was rendered the road wheels did not react to the terrain and the tank was simply placed for rendering (you can see the track was not sitting flush to the terrain. Since then I have modeled the full suspension system and it properly reacts to terrain features. In order to do that I modified the track so that it is fully articulated and reactive to the 3DS Max physical system. There are also particle generators in place to react to terrain features (dirt/dust/puddles), to simulate the exhaust, smoke generators, machinegun fire, and main gun fire.

I think you can see I was already playing with Flex on the antennas (EDIT: okay, no you can't). The polygon count is designed to increase at render time and also changes depending on how close the camera is using Open SubDiv. I have just begun to play with FumeFX for particle interaction and shockwave generation, etc.

Obviously this is not intended for games.

I have a WWII soldier that I have done the same treatment to, and I have the same model at reduced poly count ready for painting and re-topo in Mudbox. The soldier is rigged and ready for control setup (I use After Effects and MotionBuilder), which would have to be done before it could be loaded for motion mapping from capture data.

I also have the early photo-recon P-51 modeled (sans cockpit) and ready for substance application. I may share that one at some point in the future.

That all sounds very interesting. Do you have a YouTube/website where I can follow your progress?

I haven't posted any of this except to my school account and on the Sic Puppy FB page (closed group). Once I finish school (about another year) I will be working this into my first full length animation as part of the Masters program. I have the storyboard hashed out and because of the nature of the story I intend to tell it's pretty easy to skip some steps and move into R&D/Modeling/Texturing/ . . . before completing the animatic.

Basically, I didn't see the need to put anything on YouTube since there are already plenty of videos covering similar operations.

My YouTube channel is just for games at the moment.

@Chalenge

I was wondering if you went back to school later in life. Your account is almost as old as mine and you don't strike me as someone who's fresh out of high school. The reason I ask is because I'm currently contemplating seeking further education myself.

Yeah, I'm almost 60 years old. I just started looking for a way to make money using the Internet and this is what I decided to do. It may never go forward, but it's been enjoyable just the same.

We have completely hijacked MADe's thread.
