The reality is that the Russians have been violating Turkish Airspace on numerous occasions for the past several weeks.  They also were targeting Turkish Aircraft.  Everyone knows if the roles were reversed, the Russians would have acted much sooner.  The Turks did nothing wrong.

Maybe not legaly wrong, but how smart is it?

It is SOP to warn and/or intercept foreign military aircraft that are approaching or operating near the border of your airspace.

And it is not the first time the Russians have provoked the Turks. It's like they're begging for it.

There's no way this is real, right?

How on earth did one of the ejected crew members survive being shot at by every kalashnikov in 2K radius.

The same way Wyatt Earp did not get hit during the gunfight at the OK Corral.  :old:

Makes even less sense to shoot down a plane after its 17 seconds inside their airspace and why warn them for 5 minutes?

How this single Russian Su-24's sortie ended cannot be isolated from the overall situation. They had already violated Turkish airspace several times before. Then there are the reports of acquiring radar locks to Turkish military aircraft. There have be rather clear acts of deliberate provocation.

Should be no need to warn the russian plane as long as its outside their airspace.

If a russian jet crossed our airspace, any northern european airspace or even the US airspace for 17 seconds I doubt very much it would be shot down.

Russians are flying combat sorties in the region. The situation is totally different compared to more "routine" flights outside conflict zones. Russian general lack of care and poor navigation is far more tolerable when they aren't dropping live bombs very near your boarder.

(A routine QRA-sorties are sufficient in more routine cases when the 'less developed' party just isn't 'getting it' or does deliberate provocations without bombs: http://theaviationist.com/2014/09/01/finland-steps-up-air-defense-following-airspace-incursions-by-russian-planes/).

Another delusional beyond belief yellow journalism. Where did they discover Russian flown Mig-29 in Syria?

Maybe Turks forgot to read FIH....or do not want to be part of ICAO anymore.

ICAO is a civilian aviation organization. There are no hard 'rules' or 'international laws' that apply to a situation like this. At least now the Russians get a taste of how is has been like flying near their borders for the last 80 years or so.

So let me get this straight?

Russia had a passenger plane brought down by IS in the Middle East because it was bombing IS?

The fighter plane the Turks shot down was killing IS scum?

The Turkish airforce is doing what to destroy IS?!!!!!

I don't remember the Turkish army helping the only Arabs who are attacking IS the Kurds.

Every man and his dog know Turkey is one fart away from being a Funo mentalist regime.

The Russian fighter-bomber was bombing Turkmen rebels in Syria close to the Turkish border. Syrian ethnic Turks whom Turkey apparently is trying to help/protect.
