Billy Sparks, Nose Gunner Extrordinaire and Weasel legend with 355th, wrote Takhli Tales just before he passed away in 2013. I highly recommend it.
He gave me permission to use several of his stories in my book "Our Might Always - History of the 355th FG WWII" as a lead in to Volume II which will pick up in Vietnam.
The 355th TFW dropped 200,000 tons of bombs up north - 1/3 of all the bombs dropped by all the B-17s for all time. As noted above, nobody at Republic or USAF ever envisioned a Mach 1 dash speed Fighter carrying a nuc internally to hit Russia would ever serve as it did - but there was no other a/c in that day and age that could have survived better or performed better over Hanoi.
Widewing posted a "RU" bird above which is 357TFS/355TFW bird out of Takhli and "301" carried one of the 355's two MoH awards -- Maj Leo Thorsness.
The guys at Takhli figured out what needed to be done - and BEGGED to be unleashed on the rice paddy dams and got shut down by Administration - had they been allowed to hit this critical target, North Vietnam would have starved in a very short time
