Then you should be very proud.  What did he do?

- oldman (and you should read Jack Broughton's "Thud Ridge.") (If you haven't already.)

He was a WEO in the F model, a " Wild Weasel". He and his pilot  drew sam fire so they could be taken out. I was only 6 or 7 years old, broken home, I did not know much till way later in life......................... .....war takes more than lives, it can destroy families as well.

But he was a HERO! an old school hero!

Another good book on the subject:

Ed Rasimus

When Thunder Rolled: An F-105 Pilot Over North Vietnam - ISBN 978-0-89141-854-2 - Presidio Press (September 28, 2004) (Hardcover edition, January 2003, Smithsonian Institution Press)

Billy Sparks, Nose Gunner Extrordinaire and Weasel legend with 355th, wrote Takhli Tales just before he passed away in 2013.  I highly recommend it.

He gave me permission to use several of his stories in my book "Our Might Always - History of the 355th FG WWII" as a lead in to Volume II which will pick up in Vietnam.

The 355th TFW dropped 200,000 tons of bombs up north - 1/3 of all the bombs dropped by all the B-17s for all time. As noted above, nobody at Republic or USAF ever envisioned a Mach 1 dash speed Fighter carrying a nuc internally to hit Russia would ever serve as it did - but there was no other a/c in that day and age that could have survived better or performed better over Hanoi.

Widewing posted a "RU" bird above which is 357TFS/355TFW bird out of Takhli and "301" carried one of the 355's two MoH awards -- Maj Leo Thorsness.

The guys at Takhli figured out what needed to be done - and BEGGED to be unleashed on the rice paddy dams and got shut down by Administration - had they been allowed to hit this critical target, North Vietnam would have starved in a very short time

Poor F105 and the A4.......both saddled with bombs when they are far better pure fighters than most people realize.

They really never got a chance to prove themselves in pure fighter mode because they did so many other things so well.

My true love is the F-4 Phantom, but the F-105 holds a place in my heart, too. Amazing aircraft in performance and looks. Just not a turn fighter, even compared to the F-4 Phantom.

Wings Over Vietnam and moreso its successor, Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam are the way to go to enjoy this fighter in a combat flight sim. I love dogfighting MiG-17s in this brick :)

The A4 was too slow and did not have enough thrust to be a real A2A Fighter. Nasty little bugger in a knife fight if anyone is silly enough to get slow around it.
It got 2 kills with the Israeli airforce - one with cannons, aiming relative to the boresight like we do in AH because it was not equipped with an A2A sight. The second, by emptying two rocket hives into the tail of a mig 17. These were by the same pilot in one engagement by the way.

A4 is one of the greatest planes in aviation history. An amazing example of what a minimalistic design can achieve - the exact opposite of the bloated over design of a certain modern strike Fighter.

Mosquito VI - twice the spitfire, four times the ENY.

Is there anywhere that I can get either "wings over Vietnam or Strike fighters 2 -Vietnam" without buying it or getting some type of virus trying to download it?

I'm intrigued...I must play it   :aok

If you must play it, you should buy it. Still being actively sold by the developer, though not officially supported on newer operating systems. The latest nVidia drivers break SF2 series game graphics (no problem on my AMD).

You can get the F-105 in either SF2:Vietnam or SF2:Europe here: https://store.thirdwire.com/store.htm
