dot wingman position
« on: December 06, 2015, 04:13:23 PM »
If possible to set position right or left when the dot wingman function is used. So as if one player flies lead other planes in flight can set up in finger four or possible other combinations.

Just fly to whatever position in the formation and hit the auto- wingman button. No need to make formation keeping any dumber that it already is.

I would rather do away with the wingman function.

Not sure why Pots you can't fly to the position you want as Bozon noted.  If the leader would throttle back a bit, the others can slip into position.

The wingman function has it's legitimate functions, especially in events. I see no harm in adding a purely aesthetic feature to it.

I kind of have to agree with bozon, as all you have to do is get yourself into formation and activate wingman mode.  Not that I wouldn't use it myself if implemented however. :)

Personally, I rather they gave the ability to change your bomber formation instead.  Echelon right/left, line astern, line abreast, etc. :aok

Yep.  It's VERY useful for bomber groups as it allows the group to maintain formation while defending.  Prior to it's introduction, it was too easy for the group to start breaking up a little once intercepted and in their guns.

Maybe adding something to choose position relative the leader to the command like a - 1,0,+1 for left, center or right. Could do the same for up, level and down. Think of the possibilities building bomber boxes with that?

I don't get the point of this. If a player wants to man the guns and let someone else drive, then he can join as a gunner. He can even move to the -1, 0, +1 positions as suggested above.

But of course, why be a pilot and a gunner team for 3 bombers when you could have a pilot and a gunner for 6 bombers? The way it is now, taking a gunner on board is a waste.

What do gun positions have to do with the wingman command?

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not talking about changing gunner positions. This thread is about the wingman command.

You're flying along using the wingman command (I never do personally, but I see the use of it). You want to follow your leader in a certain position. Either straight trail or echelon right or left. Slightly above or below. Currently you can't do this, it just follows. I was proposing an addition to the command allowing you to choose that position in formation. Not unlike the salvo or delay commands where you specify the amount with a space after the actual dot command. 0 would be straight trail in either plane(not airplane) 1 would be tighter, a higher number looser. Plus/minus left /right or up /down.

Or maybe that'd be another whole command. Was just thinking.

If you fly your plane into the position you want, then toggle the wingman autopilot on, you will stay in that relative position automatically. I personally don't see the need to have HTC waste their time programming formation positions into the autopilot - what it does now is just fine.

Drano,
This reduces the following player to nothing more than a gunner in 3 extra drones for the leader. Not only does he not need to be able to keep formation, he does not even need to get into position. Coupled with the auto takeoff feature, a bomber player will be able to fly a complete sortie without ever touching the stick, except for touchdown during landing - he will sit in a gunner position the entire time and can even drop bombs upon the leader command without calibrating.

The bombers game is already a pile of gameplay concessions (most of which are somewhat justified) - there is no need to dumb it down even more.
