What got me noticing it was standing in line at a Starbucks a while back behind a guy wearing loafers, slacks, button up and tie, with a pink backpack on that had a cupcake on the front of it. I thought his daughter must be around somewhere with mommy and he just got tired of lugging it.

Then I started noticing it more and more.

I've got a duffel bag and a shower bag, but no way in hell am I carrying around a backpack. I didn't like them when I was in school, much less these days.

Most people with them just look childish and lazy. All but that Starbucks guy, anyhow. Still giving him the benefit of a doubt.

How do you find the time to care about something as ridiculously stupid as this?

Adults wearing backpacks is silly. I think it's more closely related to adults watching "Adventure Time" than My Little Pony. I mean, I can understand the need to carry things. That's what a briefcase is for. In the event that you need to carry more/heavier things than would be manageable by a briefcase, I would go with a nice leather messenger bag.

The My Little Pony thing... google "Bronies". But NOT on a work computer...

I use a ballistic nylon Tumi for my laptop and other crap. It has a shoulder strap and can double as stopgap armor, sufficiently loaded (with kevlar plates, haha). I like the Tumi leather, but my bags get hustled around quite a bit and there's nothing I hate more than scratches, so the ballistic was the right choice for me. It is also impervious to water.

As for the OP, I've noticed it too - and it's kind of annoying. I used to use a backpack in college. That said, these kids will grow up. For example, we had some kid with dreds (or is it "dreads? - a white kid with reddish-blond hair) come in to work. He wore them for a year or two and then, one day, he came in with a more professional look. When asked, he just said, "I just got tired of it."

If you wear a backpack and you're not in some form of school, I can't really take you seriously and will deny you admission to "The booster's club".

My Little Pony... betta than "Glitta My Little Pony". I always figure that, when my little pony chicks grow up, they tend to overleverage on things like houses and weddings, typically ending up in default. I also think they are more likely to make bad decisions regarding tats, aka "tramp stamps", but that's just one dude's opinion. See, it's all about "da pageantry". Don't try to play chess with one of them. They'll line the pieces up like a procession. No, they only have one use, and they're only marginal at that.
Some say revenge is a dish best served cold. I say it's usually best served hot, chunky, and foaming. Eventually, you will all die in my vengeance vomit firestorm.

Wow! A sharp dressed guy wearing a pink backpack with a cupcake certainly is a show stopper. Must be one of those hamsters or whatever the wannabe trend setters want to be themselves called. The image DaveBB sent made me think about a Lara Croft style thing - the backpack, not the front...

Anyhow, a backpack can be very useful for carrying all the stuff those younger people like, hands free. A cell phone for communicating, a tablet for watching movies, a Bluetooth keyboard for easy typing, a Bluetooth speaker for sharing your music, a pair of over-ear headphones for not sharing your music... and of course a gigantic power station to reload all those power hungry gadgets!

Are talking about those that make you look like pregnant, or at least like your belly were hanging over your belt buckle? Yikes!

I grew up hill walking, camping and hitch-hiking with rucksacks and backpacks. As I got older I started riding bikes instead of cars and while i had saddlebags/tank bags etc, for short trips I usually used a backpack. To this day I still ride with a backpack so i can have waterproofs/powercell etc with me, which of course means when i'm walking around its over my shoulder. Even when i'm out with my kid a backpack is still handy to have to carry all his crap. (Although recently hes got big enough to carry it himself, which he does).

Being offended or judging someone for using one seems a bit silly to me, especially since i've interviewed numerous 'suits' who carried them for jobs. From my point of view a would be middle-management candidate who I see carrying a backpack immediately has the advantage over the briefcase carrier, simply because my first impression tells me the backpack guy is more about practicality and function, whereas the briefcase is more about being worried about projecting his image, and a pretty dated image at that.

My little pony is something I haven't seen or heard of since I was about 5 however.

Ok, I don't know where else to ask this, so here is as good a place as any...

I drive a truck all over the country and see a lot of places and people. Something I've noticed that I can't get my head around is guys from 20-35+ wearing backpacks like a kid in junior high would carry. This has been getting worse in the last 5 years or so. What in the world is this all about?

I asked one today WTF it was for, he said 'holding stuff', shrugged and walked away.

I don't get the My Little Pony thing either, so maybe I'm just out of the loop? A connection here?

Well a few years back there were these things called computers. And over time they got smaller and smaller to the point you can fit an entire computer in a bag and take it with you. Some people used shoulder bags, but they ended up walking with a hunch... so the smarter people used backparks to evenly distribute the load.
