Backpacks
« on: February 24, 2016, 05:33:22 PM »
Ok, I don't know where else to ask this, so here is as good a place as any...

I drive a truck all over the country and see a lot of places and people. Something I've noticed that I can't get my head around is guys from 20-35+ wearing backpacks like a kid in junior high would carry. This has been getting worse in the last 5 years or so. What in the world is this all about?

I asked one today WTF it was for, he said 'holding stuff', shrugged and walked away.

I don't get the My Little Pony thing either, so maybe I'm just out of the loop? A connection here?

Adults wearing backpacks is silly. I think it's more closely related to adults watching "Adventure Time" than My Little Pony. I mean, I can understand the need to carry things. That's what a briefcase is for. In the event that you need to carry more/heavier things than would be manageable by a briefcase, I would go with a nice leather messenger bag. If you wear a backpack and you're not in some form of school, I can't really take you seriously.

The My Little Pony thing... google "Bronies". But NOT on a work computer...

So I should stuff the groceries for my family into a messenger bag and make several trips instead of one just to avoid not looking 'serious' enough?  :)

Since I usually bring my work laptop home with me every night, I stuff it in this backpack.

I don't give a rat's behind if I don't "look serious enough" for some people.  It's their problem, not mine.

I've been taking a backback to/from work ever since the USAF figured out we actually carry stuff around sometimes (duh) and allowed backpacks to be carried/worn in uniform.  "Stuff" is right.  My backback currently holds a 1.5" 3 ring binder full of professional reference materials, 2 fairly thick folio folders with retirement paperwork, an electric razor and toothbrush/toothpaste in case I get stuck on duty more than 12 hours (happens), 2 pairs of glasses (reading and computer), some random breakfast bar thingy in case I get locked down in my workplace (happens), some of that little squirt flavoring for water, a book of study stuff for professional pilots for after-retirement, and a book on parenting 'cause my kids are total spazzoids.  I also put my lunchbox in there 'cause my shift is 8 hours tied to a desk with no breaks except toilet runs.

Can't carry that in my hands or pockets, and a briefcase big enough to carry all that would be stupidly large/heavy.  Shoulder totes are... well, shoulder totes I guess, most look like the diaper bags we've been carrying around for almost 8 years now.

So, backpack.

If I get hired by the airlines, I think the cool kids use a professional sized roller carry-on plus a smaller detachable bag sized for headsets, tablet, etc.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Honestly, I think that's a much more professional look.

You've got a point there ack. I guess when I hear "backpack" I picture the sillier things I was used to seeing around Austin.

Why would a messenger bag be a better choice than a backpack of similar design? In the early seventies backpacks were considered "childish", so high school students carried their books in a shoulder bag. That one sided fashion caused a lot of curved spines.

Too much oestrogen in the water and 'Broke Back Mountain' are to blame for said problem.

The above is also why people buy All Terrain vehicles when they never go off road.

I'm with Ack Ack, plus, I lived in an urban area where a car wasn't really needed so I've done the grocery thing plenty. Unlike my over the shoulder bag, a backpack stays comfortable and doesn't scream LAPTOP, MUG ME.

I believe one of your countrymen pointed out the quite-real danger of 'moist leaves'.

A strong case for four-wheel drive pickup trucks in metropolitan Texas.  Yes I own a two-wheel drive example.  I use it to transport an expensive leather shoulder bag (shoulder strap removed) containing cellphone, iPad, vape juice, spare batteries, pen/pencil, tablet, and a 9mm pistol.  This is a bag that I never carry into the Truck Stop to pay for fuel.

So I say your environment truly dictates the style of bag you use.  There are imperatives after all.  In my case, 'moist leaves'.
