Self Driving Cars, Self Breaking Systems
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:52:11 AM »
Does anybody out there know anything about these laser and radar units used in the selfdriving autos?

I've seen several stories and have yet to see one address the question about all these new cars, here in the US, EU and Asia has been ahead of the US in Auto breaking and auto driving systems on the road for about 10 years now.   My question is this, the Lidar and Radar systems used.  What is the long term health issue, if any,  of sitting in traffic jam with the guy behind you just inches away blasting your automobile and you and your kids with a continues stream of high intensity radar beam.  Lidar is the Laser beam projected forward and to the sides to  recognize the roadway in front of you, as well as the panic breaking system.  Since any amount of laser light beam in the eye is to much and harmful, once these systems are loaded up and running in every automobile on every road, this can't be good. As far as I know there is no shielding on any of these cars, so that emitter in your side view mirror is radiating in all directions.  From my airline days I remember having to shut down the weather radar so we didn't cook the guy holding up the red wands when pulling into the gate.

You don't have to worry about that guy long. First time it slams on the brakes and a 18 wheeler takes him out because he could not maneuver out of the way..... all will be good.

I saw a test of a euro car's self breaking system.... ran over several photographers. LOL

It's my opinion that a lot of people do everything but drive when they should be driving. Self stopping cars just gives them a reason to do more than drive when they should be driving.

Self driving cars will be overly expensive. If you are in one and the car has an accident, it will be the auto makers fault. They have to cover that expense when they sell the vehicle. The only way out for them is to find someone dumb enough to say "I trust your employees ability 100%". That would have to cover the computer and sensor manufacturer too.

I had a "Self-Breaking" car years ago.  A 1973 VW Super Beetle.  It was broken all the time.

A car that breaks itself? Why would anybody buy that?

Any electric device today seems to have a "to be used before" date coded somewhere within. And people still buy them.

Some people are not drivers and are probably better off letting anything else drive.

I love to drive and would never waste money on something not needed.

LIDAR doesn't operate in the visual spectrum. It operates in the IR spectrum (like your TV remote).
