I'm not sure when one I got first, but it was either a break action 4-10 or a Winchester 30-30.

First one that was given to me was a 1994 ruger .22, which was given to me on my 1st birthday in 1995. First one I bought a 1943 SA M1 Garand that I bought from my dads first cousin for a very good deal  :D

My first real firearm (after several BB and pellet guns and pistols) was a Remington 514 single shot .22 rifle. My dad got from someone and gave it to me. My next firearm was a shiny new Marlin 60 semi-auto .22, for Christmas, 1967.

Since then, I've owned many different rifles, shotguns and handguns. My wife says she lost count years ago....

My most recent purchase was a 583 series, heavy barrel Mini-14. Stainless Steel with polymer stock and holographic reflex sight. Never owned one before, and I have a pretty good selection of so-called "assault rifles" and semi-autos in the safe. As an all-around utility rifle, I'm beginning to prefer it to the rest. Accurate enough, great balance, utterly dependable. Ruger has brought the Mini-14 a long way since the older versions. This and my old, but much upgraded, Marlin 9 are my favorite "fun" rifles.

My fist firearm was a .22 / .410 over and under which my father bought me when I was about 10 years of age.

The second firearm my father bought me was an Anschutz .22 target rifle after I had been firing Remington 40X's and had attained NRA Expert qualifications at the indoor 50 foot range.

I did not earn the NRA Distinguished Expert award for 50 feet because I joined the Army two days after my 17th birthday, and shortly thereafter, I earned the Army's Expert Marksmanship Badge firing the M-14 rifle. A few years later, when I was in Marine Corps boot camp, I missed breaking the range record by 1 point whilst firing the M-14. I've never fired less than Expert in the military, whether pistol, or rifle.

At age 65, I don' see too well without help, but don't risk your life upon it because I was trained in the foundations of shooting.

Dad bought me a tube fed semi auto Marlin .22 LR and a single shot break open 410 gauge shotgun around 10 years old.  Got a lot of plinking and hunting done with those two guns!

At age 65, I don' see too well without help, but don't risk your life upon it because I was trained in the foundations of shooting.

I'm 63 and I've needed reading glasses since my mid 50's.  This was problematic with conventional rifle sights. I could wear glasses and focus on the sights. I could not wear glasses and focus on my target. I could not do both. Peep sights were better, but the front post is still pretty fuzzy.

My options were to put a long eye relief scope on everything or seek another solution.

I found that solution in a holographic reflex sight. I can use the red dot or the red crosshair. Beyond 50 yards, the dot is better as it obscures less of the target. I now have four rifles and one shotgun fitted with these optical sights. For distances beyond 100 yards a standard rifle scope is a better choice. My Remington is fitted with a Leupold, the Savage has a Nikon and the JW-15 (.22 LR) does well with a 4x 30mm Simmons. That 25 year-old JW-15 (Chinese knock-off of the CZ-455), is a genuine tack driver. On a windless day, at 100 yards, you can cover a 10 shot group with a nickel...

For shorter range shooting, the holographic is ideal for me. Because both eyes are open, my field of vision is normal, helping to acquire targets and spot motion. A great solution of home defense guns (carbine or shotgun). Dots and reticles are adjustable for brightness. Various manufacturers, but not very expensive for good quality sights. Even the $30 models work well enough for plinkers. Fits on Weaver bases, but Picatinny rails are best and are made for most long arms.

Widewing, I found that is you use computer glasses they can substitute for shooting as well. Since they are focused a couple feet out using them can keep the front sight crisp. Works great with handguns as well.

That used to work for me when my diopter was 1.25 or 1.50.

These days I'm at 2.25, which means things at distance are a blur. With the holographic I can wear my bifocal shooting glasses, because the dot and reticle are sharp with or without them.

I got 20/20 vision at distance but I have been using reading glasses last couple of years.  I cant see the sights either.
