Never 10
« on: August 25, 2016, 05:18:01 PM »
I downloaded Never 10 and ever since then I have not been able to download my windows updates in Win 7. It shows that I have 11 security updates waiting to download but they never download no matter how long I leave the computer on to download and install them.

Anyone else having this issue?

I put never 10 on 3 windows 7 computers. One updates fine. One lagged a month but then started updating again. The third doesn't even find updates when I do a search. I uninstalled Never 10 but it made no difference.  I'm not sure it's caused by Never 10 since only one of my 3 seems to have a serious update problem. You may want to check this thread.

Never10 doesn't actually install anything, but it does make configuration changes to Windows 7. You may wish to read through the technical details in order to get the updates you are looking for.

Never 10 didn't do that to me. But this may be what's happening to you.

There's been a LOT of trouble getting updates especially for Windows 7. It may be because the constant updating of Win10 may be prioritized on the MS servers.

The latest issue I had was with a fresh install of Win7 SP1. No matter what I did, it couldn't find any updates in the 12 hours or so I let each fix run before interrupting. I've heard similar stories from other tech shops, one even reinstalled it thrice from different medias to make sure it wasn't an issue with the installation itself.

On my own system I have run Never 10. My updates have been set to manual and "only install critical updates". Last time I ran the update it took about six hours to find the updates.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

One of these might help explain what's happening with windows update.

My Vista 64 computer refused to update even after sitting checking updates for 3 days until I did this fix. It had been 10 months since last update so it still took about 45 minutes even after the fix.

Bizman I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro 64 last weekend and running the fix above got it working. Between windows and ms office it seemed like there were about 500 updates and they kept coming in waves. The 1st wave was about 260 updates. It sucked having to check for that lame windows 10 crap.

Thanks, Drane. Those explain why Windows Update is slow. However, it doesn't explain why it has become so much slower than it used to be. The speed has decreased exponentially in just half a year or so. What used to take half an hour a year ago, took a couple of hours in the spring and now it can take 24+ hours to find the list of available updates on a fresh install. There's been roughly half a dozen critical updates a month for Win7 including the monthly malicious software removal tool, and for what I've seen the total amount to be installed after using a standard Win7 SP1 installation media has raised from ~130 to ~155 on the first run plus the ~20 updates to the updates installed in the first batch during the last year or so.

I tried that, too. At first I tried to install the first update on the list, let it search for installed updates for an hour or so, when I noticed that for a fresh install they recommended one single update of the Update Client. So I rebooted and tried that. It didn't do the trick overnight.

Those can very easily be avoided by changing the settings to install critical updates only. That also reduces the total amount of updates from 500 to 200.

The windows 7 disk I used for that computer didn't have SP1 so I patched SP1 before trying to update.

I agree the recommended updates aren't necessary but since that computer is for my wife I went through them.

The 1st run at update did take a while but don't know exactly how long because I left to run errands and when I got back a few hours later it was ready. I didn't pay attention to the message about when the checks were complete.

MajWoody here is a possible method for fixing the download stuck at 0% issue. This has worked for me in the past.

Thanks guys for all of the input. Last night I left it stuck at zero again all night for the umteenth time and to my surprise when I got up this morning it had downloaded the 11 security updates that I had checked. All is well again.  If it happens again I'll revisit this thread and apply your fix's.

Thanks again

That's the way I've found out it works nowadays. Just leave it overnight and if you're lucky the updates will be finished when you wake up. Nothing wrong with our systems, it's on the other end. Or at least that's how it looks like.

Oh, it is absolutely on the other end.  Microsoft appears to be deliberately delaying Windows updates to anyone not running Windows 10.  It is another way to try and coerce people to change to Windows 10.

Installing a fresh copy of windows 7 pro 64 on another computer this morning has been a pleasure for a change.

Manually installed KB3138612, the latest update client for win 7 x64, prior to going online.

Updates searches have been quick, just a few minutes. Must have caught them in a lull for downloads.

Skuzzy I agree.  I am running Win 8.1 with no problems and have Win10 blocked.  I received about 40 updates a week ago and not received another since.  I know my ver. of 8.1 is not currant.
