most airplane skins are like mirrors unless reflections turned off

I keep reflections turned off because most airplane skins look odd. Screenshots of reflections on and disabled.

I generally don't mind the reflections, I think it is supposed to mimic polished aluminum.  However, some reflections seem a bit odd.  The lower half of the engine nacelle of the B-17 reflects the instrument panel.  Doesn't seem possible.

Let me say the reflections on the gauge glass in the B17 is about as cool as it can get.

I agree the reflections in the engine cowlings on painted, multiple engine planes is mirror like. 

On the B17 as an example, the reflection on the cowling shows a down view into the cockpit from a reflection point below the window.
