Questions for Nvidia Experts
« on: October 08, 2016, 05:51:24 PM »
Well, just very knowledgeable will do :lol
I just got an EVGA GTX 1060 SSC and love it. It's a BIG improvement over the HD 6950. FPS of 150-300 depending on surroundings. Dropped to around 60-70 in heavy forest with tank gun sight fully zoomed. That's with default settings. Max temp 74C with CPU load of 99%. Fans never got above 34%.

Now for my questions:

The driver (373.06 Oct. 6, 2016) download include several other pieces of software. I installed them all but wonder if I need them or some I may be better off without. They are:
PhysX System Software
3D Vision Controller Driver
Nvidia HD audio Driver (I have a Soundblaster Z with newest driver)
NVIDIA Geforce Experience
3D Vision Driver

Should I uninstall some of them? I intend to look them up but I know some of you may havde the answers based on experience.

I'm not sure how to adjust settings for the card. Is that the Geforce experience? When I clicked on it it asked me if I wanted to install it.

Are there any other utilities that you recommend?

The only thing I see that I don't like is a lot of shimmer of trees and structures at a distance. Antialiasing on or off in the game makes no difference. I see it in DX9 and DX11. I saw it with the 6950 and hoped the 1060 would fix it. Anyone have a solution to this?

I'm assuming the max temp of 74 is OK. It could certainly be lowered by speeding up the fans. I didn't notice them at 34%. I also don't know what software I need to change the fan curve.

Any help will be appreciated.  :salute

I've been an Nvidia user for quite some time. I install the video driver and the physix driver and uncheck all of the rest so that they don't get installed. You have a soundcard, and unless you're using 3d glasses you have no need for any of the rest.

Thanks,

I also see an Nvidia virtual audio device (wave extensible) WDM in device manager. Anyone know what that is? Also the GTX 1060 does not show up in device manger but does in the DxDiag. Is that an issue? Everything seems to work fine.

You can right click the Nvidia audio device and disable it. That is so you can have audio on the HDMI cable, which you should not need with your audio card being so much better. The video card should show up as a display adapter in device manager.

That's what I thought but it doesn't. Card is obviously working well though.  :headscratch:

The last Nvidia card had software to adjust video settings such as anti-aliasing but this doesn't appear to or at least I can't find it.

Here you can find a page that will sense your card and find the proper driver for you. It sounds like you didn't get the installer to complete properly, or just got the update from Microsoft (not good).

I downloaded the newest driver from the EVGA site before installing the card and installed the driver after installing the card before connecting to the Internet. I'll try what you recommend.

Normally you just right-click the desktop and you can see the Nvidia Control Panel there. If that isn't working, then something went wrong. When you said you couldn't find it . . .

That's okay. People that are supposed to know computers better than either of us have made worse mistakes.

I recommend just using the Nvidia drivers. I don't uncheck anything, but I do disable the HDMI sound in device manager.

I also run Geforce experience which 1) allows you to record/stream via shadowplay and 2) alerts you to newest video driver release.  It also allows "customizing" of games....

I don't use my card manufactures "repackaged" drivers, I go straight to nvidia for them.

No issues to date..

It depends if you want some extra bloatware or just the minimal of installing the drivers.  If you are using onboard sound or a dedicated sound card, then do not install the Nvidia HD Audio drivers.  If you are not using a 3D monitor or 3D glasses (not the same as VR) then do not install the 3D Controller and 3D Vision Driver.  If you do not intend to use the recording and sharing features within the GeForce Experience program, do not install that either.

Since AH doesn't use PhysEx and AH is the only game you play then there is no need to install that either.  However, if you play other games it is recommended you install it as PhysEx is used in a lot of other games.
