At the Udvar-Hazy in August, I tried to put into words (inadequately) to my wife about Bob Hoover's Aero Commander power-off Cuban Eight.  Oh yeah, I said, and he survived (when many didn't) flying a P39 against the Luftwaffe in North Africa.

I really admired Bob Hoover since I was a little boy.  A true aviator and pioneer.

I was fortunate to see Mr. Hoover's routine at the CAF Airsho' in Harlingen.  The energy management series in the Shrike Commander was eye watering.

.One of my earliest memories of an airshow was watching him perform in Tucson at Davis-Monthan AFB. I saw his act in the commander and the bright yellow P51. I have never seen anyone better since. He was the best stick and rudder man ever as far as I am concerned.

Fair skies and tailwinds forever Sir. May you rest in Peace.  :salute

I saw Bob Hoover fly a P51 Mustang at Apple Valley, California.  It's something I will never forget.  There was a 20 mph crosswind and he ran the Mustang the length of the field on one wheel.  You could see the exhaust smoke when he applied full throttle at the end of the runway." The airplanes that I was flying their were limited to a 15 mph crosswind for take off or landings"
He was quite the character he escaped from a German prisoner of war camp by stealing a Fw190 and flying it out.  I believe his autobiography was called Always Flying it's a great read..
I wish him blue skies and green lights
     RIP :salute
