new option: Explode or fly dead
« on: July 20, 2001, 01:07:00 AM »
this way when the pilot is killed you could have the option to keep flying sans pilot and watch in external view as your plane augers in or flies along drifting into the ground or if your bored with that you could click the tower button and your plane will explode and send you back to the tower  :)

give the players the option!  :)

Interesting idea.  It makes me wonder why your plane disappears when you bail out.  This wasn't the case in WB.  It was kinda neat to watch your plane tumble to the ground while you hung underneath the canopy  :)

Is this a limitation of the game engine?

that would be nice too

i always hated the fact that bailing out turned your entire aircraft into a  chute

This is a feature I really missed when I started flying AH, bring it `back` please.  :)

You smell that? Do you smell that?
Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell, you know that gasoline smell, smelled like victory.

I agree on this, but not only   ;)

I would like to see bailings under 4+G's or over (say) 350 kts. impossible to do. If your wingless plane it's spiralling down making some serious 400 kts., you are bound to it to the bitter end   ;).

Cheers,

While it's a mildly interesting option... seems like a lot of work for such a small thing.  I'm sure it would be pretty far down the list of HT's priorities.  To a degree you alreay have a choice... you can bail or ride your bird to the dirt.  For the majority of times, just not bailing works fine for me to observe my spiraling death.  It would be cool though if when you died the camera switched to a view out in front of your plane looking back, hopefully showing your attacker blasting you to bits. Heh.  A few seconds of that would be very cool.  However, I'm sure there are graphical and bandwidth considerations for that as well.

What would REALLY be cool is to have the option to have an "instant replay" turned on.  That would rock... have it so that every time you die, it "rewinds" like 10 seconds and shows you from external view yourself getting shot up.  That would look great.  :)  Technically, it might not be reasonable to do though.

BTW, as far as your plane "turning into" a chute when you bail, it kinda has to be that way for bandwidth reasons if you think about it.  It would take a lot more host power and bandwidth to track all those pilotless planes floating around.  While the other way is "cooler", this way is much more efficient.  It's really necessary to do it this way when you start thinking about things like scenarios where you have to minimize the impact on the host of lots of planes in the same area.

HT does it this way for very good reasons.  It can't hurt to suggest cool flaming death-scenes though... you never know what HT will come up with down the road.    :)

Actually, non-piloted planes could be done on the client FE.  Once you bail, you're not in control of your plane anymore, so no more user inputs would be given to it.  The plane disappears from the host server, yet keeps on trucking til it goes boom on the client machines that were in the vicinity of the plane.  Of course this would constitute coding time that should be going to a SBD Dauntless and F4F Wildcat!!   :D

I kinda like it the way it is... the machine gun planes are at a big enough disadvantage as it is in the arena.   When I make a plane explode then some cannon bird can't come along and shoot up the wingless hulk and get the kill.

Lazs. presumably you would be awarded the kill at the same time as now. But the icon on the bad guy would go white.
The way WB does it is definatly better. There must be some fundimental issue with the game arcitecture that prohibits a plane existing without a pilot. So as the plane wallows down in a flat spin from 35k the dead pilot cannot respawn..or something like that.
I would like some more smarts in the game engine as to what a kill is to. A whole wing gone is a kill. Only engine on fire is a kill, Any stab gone is a kill.

Like Nifty says - it could all be done client side and be switched off for lower end machines.

The instant reply option would be nice. I usually forget to turn my camera on after I get into combat, and never see the exact sequence of mistakes...err... events that lead to my untimely demise.  ;)

I can guarantee you it's not a limit with the game, it just hasn't been put in yet.

It took WB until 1.03 (from .96) to get the code in that turns the plane's icon white as it pilotlessly lawn darts.

Believe me, it will get here when HT has time to throw in those secondary effects.

I think his goal is to get a playable product with a developed strat model (trains.. remember trains??) and other neat things that will mute the crowd ranting about getting more strat options.

When he's muffled them, he can work on these secondary effects.

In other words: Just wait.

This is a great idea so long as the kill is not awarded until the pilot either clicks tower or the plane crashes.  This way the enema will have to guess whether to continue pursuing or not.  But for gameplay, when the kill is awarded it should go to whoever actually  kilt the pilot.

I like Pepe's idea too.

Interesting point cit. In Janes WWII Fighters you could bail out and watch your plane fly pilotless with an open canopy till it ran out of gas.

Good ideas Cit & Trox.  I'm sure HT had a good reason for not doing it that way initially but maybe he'll take another look at it.
