Monitors?
« on: March 29, 2017, 04:48:21 PM »
So now I have a machine capable of delivering awesomeness I was wondering what you guys suggest for a monitor.

My current one is an Asus 22" 2ms old lcd,  I can only fit 24" max in my cupboard.   So I see the new ones are now 144hz or 4k?   What is best for a single monitor setup?

I think it's time you come out of the closet.

This is the 4k monitor my wife got me for Christmas to replace my old LG 24 inch LED monitor.

The game looks really good, however, I have problems seeing bandits far away when they're just a dot.

I have both a 4k monitor and a 144hz monitor.

The 4k looks amazing but I prefer to play on the 144hz.

Response times may be important to you, my 144 is a 4ms and the 4k is 5ms

Finally, consider your GPU and what connections it has.  My 144hz monitor only has 1 input and that is Display port so obviously your GPU will need that, I am sure all modern ones will have it.

I got one of these and the build quality, image and gameplay is great. Worth every penny for me.

Bruv, to really enjoy 4k 24" is way too small. Admittedly the image quality is sharp, you won't need any AA at that resolution at that size. However, as Ack-Ack said, seeing a single picture sized dot is next to impossible. Also, you won't necessarily not notice any difference to a 1440p, maybe not even to a 1080p.

Scaling is another thing to take into consideration. Windows 7 is a good operating system, but it was made long before 4K became widely available. Even Win8 may struggle in getting the desktop icons and menu texts right. The size can be altered but the quality may suffer.

You may already have read between the lines that I suggest you get a 1440p @ 144Hz. That would give you the best of both worlds. However, that might be hard to find. In that case get a 1080p @ 144Hz.

Some math: A 1440p monitor has 1.33 times the pixels compared to a 1080p. Thus, if you want the same pixel size you're using now on your 22", a 29" 1440p is the answer. Then again, if you go from 22" to 24" on 1080p, the size difference is only 1.09x - not too much for you to find it disturbing but a little bigger to help seeing the enemy from far.

Groovy Broovy, IMO if you're limited to 24", I wouldn't go 4k myself at that size, and also the fact that playing AH in 4k, the targets are VERY small, even in 2k/1440p, I find them a lot smaller.  If this won't bother you, the game looks fantastic at 4k though.

144hz is another thing, absolutely do NOT settle for a 60hz monitor, get a 144hz, or at least 100/120hz.  Asus makes a great 24" 144hz monitor, while a bit dated now, is still selling well for Asus.  I ran 3 of these for 2 years.  VG248QE, not sure on the price in Her Majesty's Royal Amazon.

Not sure on your system, if you have an nVidia or AMD video card.  If you have an nVidia card that is capable of Gsync, I would spend the extra and buy the Asus ROG Swift 24" 144hz Gsync monitor,  PG248Q .  It's very new, all the ROG line was 27" (I have 2 of them, one IPS and the first one they released with is a TN-like panel), and a 34" one ( have this too).  The 24" was made at the request of a lot of Esports players as many prefer playing pro CS GO on 24 as opposed to larger.

So, if 24" is your size, those 2 are the best options IMO.  There are other 24" 144hz from BenQ and others which are great too.  The model USVI linked was on display, refurbs at my local PC shop, for only $150USD, great deal, and a great 144hz.  Just do NOT get a 60hz, you'll immediately see the difference running 144fps over 60fps.  I'm not sure this is a good idea for the MA, you're already too good and making you more lethal sucks the pills for the rest of us.

The object sizes are not (not supposed to) going to change based on the resolution of the monitor.  That said, a single dot will vary in size based on the DPI (PPI if you want to get really technical) of the monitor.

The game does not actually control this.  The scaling is all handled in DirectX.  Now it is possible in Windows 10 for that to get messed up as Windows 10 does have DPI scaling issues, slated to be corrected in a few months.
