A question about squads in AH
« on: June 26, 2000, 05:24:00 PM »
I was just curious as to the origins of the various squads here in AH land.  How many are new ones for AH and how many are carry-overs from sims like WB.  This is my first real online sim and am curious about this.

I'm a recent addition, so I don't know the full story, but here's the basic story of how the Fat Drunk Bastards came to be.

HiTech found himself driving down an alley in Austin and inadvertantly ran into a bum that was sleeping there in a drunken stupor.  That bum turned out to be Fatty, so naturally HT's car took the brunt of the damage.  Still, HiTech being the charitable type, he decided to set Fatty up with a free AH account that he could fly on when he was at the local library...he even gave an account to Gordo who was in a similar drunken stupor in a cardboard box nearby.  Realizing that they were undesireables and to isolate these two from the rest of the community, he dubbed them the Fat Drunk Bastards, not realizing that there was a contingent of players that currently fit this description.  From that time forward, Fatty and Gordo have scraped the bottom of the AH barrel to find recruits and get them out of general circulation, and here we are!

Math,

Without getting into to much detail the 332nd Flying Mongrels had their beginnings in
Warbirds about 3 years ago.  We grew from a squad of 2 to about 40 members in
that period of time.  We also had strong ties with the Black Aces a head to head
squadron who's C.O. was Kieren.  Much to the efforts of ghosth our squadrons grew
together over time.

The move to Aces High really hurt our ranks with many remaining in Warbirds, but a
core group is with us here in Aces High.  Nevertheless our philosophy remains the
same, to fly, make friends and have fun.

There are as many different types of squads as there are squads. Some have more rules and regs, some are just to have fun flying with your buddies.

You probably will find some who like one type of A/C, ASAF, Navy, RAF, INJ or LW more than others. Oh ya, buff squads too. AH may have panzer groups too. Such as the 15th Panzer division.

Try flying with some squads during their squad time. Shop around some and find one where you feel comfortable.

The squad I'm in is more of the easy going type. Our No. 1 rule is to have fun. They do make plans and give orders. Heck, sometimes I even follow their orders.

Find yourself a good squad and you'll find some good friends. You'll find yourself thinking of them as an extended family.

(the squad i'm in thinks well enough of me that they will fly in close formation, in front of me, with KILLSHOOTER off)
Hurry up Daddog and fix your pc, my gunnery is getting rusty.

Well,

The F.U.B.A.R.S. were formed way back in 1988/89 In the very beginning days of DOS AW
I think HiTech & I are one of the oldest if not the oldest wing & lead pair still flying.
And you know what.. Score does not matter, it's just a lot of fun!

My squad is the Aces High extension of the WarBirds 1st Polish Fighter Wing (Northolt Wing).  We have some guys who fly AH only, and an increasing number who fly AH and WB.

The Red Dragons have been formed in january '98, that time playing the WW1 simulation "Flying Circus"... After FCs beta ended we moved on to Red Baron 3d and finally in october '99 Rocket, Duma and I formed the Aces High division

There's a pretty comprehensive history of our squad available on our website, check my signature for the link

JG2 was formed by Jochen in WB's (I believe it  was Jochen) and when AH started beta, Weazel began a branch of JG2 over here.  Weazels since moved onto greener pastures starting a new squad and I defaulted as CO (to be honest, I'd rather be just a communications offizier rather than CO).  JG2 grew  fast while Weaz was CO, up to 60 at one point, which was good, and bad.  We're now at about active 53 members, and Jochen, Vadr from WB's frequent the JG2 line  up over  here.

The Men Of Leisure  **MOL**  was founded in DOS AirWarrior by Mute and myself in December of 94.  It was re-organized in WarBirds to make a home for some guys who suddenly found themselves without a squad after Vigl disbanded his.

Most of the WB squad has migrated to AH, to be joined by some great new guys, and now fly under Dago's (cough) leadership.

We have no rules, regulations, ranks, or requirements -- other than watch yer squadie's butt and have fun.

Oh...and NO SINGING!!!

My squad was started in WB in 1997 by Sick, Tanz, and Thog as the 487th FS.

In Oct 99 we expanded to the 352nd FG and now have over 30 pilots in WB in three squadrons of the 352nd FG, 328th, 486th and 487th FS's.  This year we had the great honor to be named "Friends of the 352nd" by the 352nd FG Association and also their official virtual representative.

As of right now there are two of us flying AH, although more show up on occasion.
