Server side controller settings
« on: May 11, 2017, 02:38:49 PM »
I wish the settings for your joysticks/controls/flight preferences would be saved on + accessed from the sever.

What's the benefit of it being saved on the server versus client side?

If I have to reinstall it or take a break from the game I don't have to reconfigure it again unless I have different hardware.

Besides, this is the age of the cloud! Its common for games to have their settings remembered somewhere on a server. Steam and other support systems do this.

you can make backups of any config files and keep them in folders outside the game's directory.

Part of progression/development is to automate trivial things to add value to the game.

And when you are in that one spot where you need your settings, but the Internet is not cooperating, what then?  The entire CM team designs all the arena settings offline and then uploads them.  What if they could not get their settings?

I am not saying there are not any upsides, but there are always downsides to doing anything.  One just has to weigh them against the benefit and make a determination.

When people stop doing their own backups because they depend on remote storage to be there, is when things get problematic.  I have seen it happen too many times lately.

I think you are exaggering the situation, I clearly mean for players, not for sensitive things like arena settings for CMs. If the net isn't working, well I guess you just gotta deal with it till it comes back.

Is that really worth the concern though Skuzzy?  Keeping a local copy of the settings as last known for that eventuality would surely account for nearly all circumstances wouldn't it?

I can't remember the last time I was without internet connection in my home.

Skuzzy trips over the server power cord regularly.   You know that.

You did not understand what I said, as I probably said it poorly.  For a CM to design an arena settings file, they have to have their game settings for their stick to be able to move around the arena and test said settings.

Again, I am not saying there could be benefits, but it is not without downsides.

If my Internet connection goes down, and it does (every spring during the hail storms) and I want to fly offline, just to practice, I would be hosed if I did not keep a backup of those files.  Remote storage tends to cause people to stop doing local backups.  That is a bad thing.

You know he doesn't care about your answers Skuzzy, or he would have let it go with your first answer. He knows everything you answered as well as you do.

I've lost all of my settings for the game numerous times, it takes about 30 minutes to put them all back when I've misplaced my backup or deleted it like once during the alpha. Most applications have never been very complicated to reproduce what you have already done in them. Aside from some things macro scaled like a full MA terrain. Bet anything he creates that large he backs up just like the rest of us. What next, hold his beer when he blows his nose because he doesn't want to keep a USB stick with his settings around?

Bet half the guys in the forums would send him their settings files to get him up and running on any given day. Many of them love being helpful like that over game things.

Say Skuzzy, my power cord is a bit loose and I was wondering if you could hold it in place for me just in case..... :O

bustr, lighten up.  :)

I never mind a respectful conversation.  You never know when someone might bring up something the other person did not think about and it might lead to something.

What I meant was "automatically keep a local copy", in other words every time you change your settings a copy gets stored remotely and locally.  If the remote one isn't available, use the local copy.

So, you are asking for an automatic backup solution?  I suppose you want it to be able to roll back if you fubar your settings as well?
