How often should I update the driver?  (Currently using one dated 8/25/16.)

If things are working well on your end with your current driver then there is no pressing need to update it.  However, if you also play other, more new games than it might be a good idea to stay current on your drivers.

My general rule of thumb is not to update until you need to (ie some issue comes up)...but I think you'll find mixed results here. There's quite a few who will update on release (or even in a beta program) and others who won't update for quite a while. Personal preference I suppose.

It also depends on your video card and the rest of your system. Nvidia drivers should be compatible with most every model capable to run AH, but even a card as new as a GTX970 may not work flawlessly with the newest drivers, at least not on an older computer. Find a driver that is both fast and stable and stick to it.

If it works, don't break it.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

This is good advice.

If you play mostly STEAM games and buy your games on sale, then you probably do not need to update your drivers.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

In AH, I am occasionally seeing "Texture Creation Error = FFFFFFFF  Name = 00000024  Format = 00000000".  Is that a sign that it's time to update drivers?

I had this error as well.

I had improperly installed NVidia drivers.

It's worth a try.

This error is mostly due to the video card running out of resources.  Usually it is an AMD/ATI video card with 1GB of video RAM.  It can be a driver which is too old as well, or a 6000 or 4000 series video card.

Easy way to see if it is resource related issue.  Disable "shadows" and "detail" and see if the error goes away.  It is not a good thing to get that error.  There can be other side effects.

I got several pages of that error whenever the battleship 16" shells landed after I shot them.

I also get once in a while when I crash.

What are the other side effects?

That is pretty much it.  The errors can happen anytime resources get starved and the game can become very unstable.  It is not a good condition.  The game is telling you to back down some of the graphic settings.

Updated to the current driver.  Still getting the error.

Are you sure you updated and are using the right device?

Like do you have an Intel IGP that's being used by the game instead of the NVidia?

Check your DXDIAG and and make sure the driver is updated and that the NVidia card is listed, rather than another device.

I have zero reports of this problem with any current model NVidia card.

Are you using 64 bit Windows 7, or 32 bit?
