The Orville
« on: November 19, 2017, 01:23:04 PM »
I've never been a huge Seth McFarland fan, so I was a little leery of this idea..

But.. wow.. I'm impressed.

There's some good stuff there.  Really fun to watch.

Sure, some of the science has holes, and a purist military posture would have half the staff in the brig..

But the zingers are awesome.

Yeah love it. Very entertaining and doesn't take itself too seriously. A YouTube vid comparing Star Trek Discovery caused me to find it, which is in contrast a stinker.

They are featured in a very small way!  :old:

It's a sci fi comedy sort of Star Trek-like. Some witty dry humour. Download a couple of episodes. 10 was the last one. First series.

I think there's a model of the Wright Flyer on the captain's desk.

As a former Trekker I will definitely look this up.

Saw the trailers and we decided to give it a chance. Both of us are trekkies and to be honest I find it more entertaining than the one episode of the "new trek" that was aired on sat tv. I wasn't intrigued enough about that pay to watch series to toss down the card to watch it on my tablet. If they get around to putting it on TV then I will give it another chance.

Same here.  Saw the first episode of Discovery and didn't find it compelling enough to subscribe.

I find Orville entertaining, with a big nod towards the original Star Trek.  The opening sequence has Star Trek written all over it.

Hey Maverick, do what most people are doing to cat ST: Discovery.  Subscribe for one month, binge watch it, and cancel.  Do not expect it to follow cannon, even though they are trying to plug it into the timeline.  As a stand-alone sci-fi show, I find it pretty entertaining, but dark.

I don't understand why there are orcs in space speaking Klingon.  The show had me too confused.

It's sad when the Star Trek parody does more to be like Star Trek than the actual show.

Like the show. While the "Star Trek" influence is definitely there, I think they drew somewhat on "Galaxy Quest" as well. The music and opening sequence is very reminiscent of "Galaxy Quest". Also not a big Seth McFarland fan, but there are times his Capt Ed Mercer is down-right brilliant.

I liked Discovery overall, but its more like Star Trek on HBO when no one sensitive is around than the Jean Luc Picard (or Kirk) at dinner time with the family we may have grown up with.

I'll have to check out Orville. The commercials for it made it look like total cheese.  I liked Galaxy Quest a lot, but I wasn't looking forward to a TV show that is nothing but a parody.  It sounds like you guys think Orville achieved more than this though.  Is the first season done?  I'd rather binge it.
Boildown

This is the Captain.  We have a lil' problem with our entry sequence so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Last episode broadcast on December 7th. Imho, it's just what decent TV is all about. Entertaining and doesn't take itself too seriously.
